the ASTM A572 Grade 60 steel plate is capable of transferring a load of 62 tons to the soil without

failure, we will need to calculate the allowable bending stress of the plate.

Given:

Area of the steel plate (A) = 3 square meters

Thickness of the steel plate (t) = 25mm = 0.025 meters
Load applied to the plate (P) = 62 tons = 124,000 lbs = 553,378.5 Newtons
Maximum allowable soil pressure = 20 cm = 0.2 meters
The formula to calculate the maximum bending stress in a rectangular plate is as follows:

σ = M*c / I

where: σ = maximum bending stress M = bending moment c = distance from the neutral axis to the
extreme fiber I = moment of inertia

The bending moment (M) can be calculated as follows:

M=P*l/4

where: P = Load applied to the plate l = length of the plate

Assuming the plate is a square (3 meters by 3 meters), the length (l) will be equal to 3 meters.

M = 553,378.5 * 3 / 4 M = 415,033.875 Nm

Next, we need to calculate the distance from the neutral axis to the extreme fiber (c) using the formula:

c = t / 2 c = 0.025 / 2 c = 0.0125 meters

The moment of inertia (I) for a rectangular plate is:

I = b * t^3 / 12
Assuming b is the width of the plate (3 meters):

I = 3 * 0.025^3 / 12 I = 0.000046875 m^4

Now, we can calculate the maximum bending stress (σ):

σ = 415033.875 * 0.0125 / 0.000046875 σ = 109,034,680 Pa or 109 MPa or 1016 ton

The allowable bending stress for ASTM A572 Grade 60 steel is typically around 250 MPa 2330 ton.
Since the calculated bending stress of 109 MPa is lower than the allowable stress, the plate should be
able to safely transfer the load of 62 tons to the soil without failure.
