Abstract The recently-issued Chinese translation of Nineteenth Century Piano Music Second Ed is deeply
flawed in matters ranging from terminology to idiomatic expression to simply grasping the authorsintentions Unfor-
tunatelythe problems throughout this translation do not present a special case but are shared by numerous other
Chinese translations This review not only critiques Nineteenth Century Piano Music from the perspectives of both ac-
ademic research and the art of translation but examines in light of the latest scholarship the larger issues raised by
Chinese translations of Western music academic books
