Final Portfolio Assignment and Checklist 2017

Overview:
Revision is such an importantand often ignoredpart of the writing process. So many of us are
tempted to hand in the first copy we print off, usually without reading it first. Students who proofread
your own work, or who ask a friend to proofread your paper for you, most likely score higher because
minor mistakes are eliminated. This portfolio will allow you to create multiple drafts for you papers,
proofread your papers, revise them, and ultimately utilize your own writing process in order to become a
better writer.

Assignment:
You will compile, in portfolio form, one of each of the big writing assignments that you created for each of
the In-Class novels. Each of these papers must include a Graded Draft (complete with my comments and
your handwritten notations) and a Revised Draft (with all changes highlighted).

What is the difference between revising a paper and an editing a paper?

A revised paper has added or changed ideas (paragraphs and sentences), while an edited paper only has
fixed mistakes (punctuation, spelling, etc.). You should edit any mistakes, but what I am looking for is that
you thought about your writing, utilized what weve learned together in class, and made changes in each
paper that improved your writing. If you choose to only edit your papers, your grade will reflect your
decision.

What should my Graded Draft look like?

The Graded Draft should be a final draft that I handed back to you, complete with my comments and a
completed rubric attached. (If you do not have your Graded Draft, you need to print off another copy and
make your own notes on it.) This Graded Draft should look messy when you are done with it. It should
have both my and your handwritten notes on it. If you take something out, cross it out. If you add
something, handwrite it in. Respond to any notes I wrote on you paper by either making changes or write
a note if you disagree with my comment. I should be able to see that you actively re-read your paper and
thought about how to improve your writing.

Due Date and use of class time:

The due date for your completed portfolio is ________________________________ when you walk into class. You
will be allowed some class time to work on revising and assembling your portfolio, but you will have to
work on it outside of class also to create successful revised drafts. DO NOT put this off until the very last
week before it is due. You need to put time and thought into your revisions!
