EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES for PICTURE SORTS:

Monday: Say & Sort. Have your child cut out each picture and then sort them into correct columns/categories. Your
child should say the name of the picture emphasizing the beginning sound aloud while doing this activity.

Tuesday: Play memory. Lay the picture cards upside down. Turn two cards over. If the pictures/words begin with
the same sound or have the same pattern they are a match.

Wednesday: Write the letters that match the beginning sound of each picture. Some fun ways to write the letters
are: rainbow, in salt/sugar, around the paper rather than straight down, in different shapes.

Thursday: No Peeky! Have your child take a practice test. Say the picture cards out loud and your child will write the
first letter they hear without looking at the header (the strip with the letters on it). Encourage neatness.

Friday: An assessment on the beginning sound will be given in class.

Spelling Homework

Dear Parents,

We will be using the Words Their Way spelling program this year. The main goal of spelling instruction
is to help children transfer words from weekly spelling lists into daily writing. Accurate spelling is a
natural outgrowth of word study. Instead of learning a set of words each week, we are enabling
students to: recognize whole families of words, identify when words need to be fixed in their writing,
and organize information in their brain.

Depending on your childs spelling level, they will sometimes or always have letter/picture sorts
instead of words. As they progress through the spelling program the words and sounds will increase in
difficulty until mastered. These picture sorts are intended to help your child master the letters of the
alphabet and the sounds they make. At the beginning, the assessment given will be to write the
correct letter that matches the beginning sound of the picture they see/hear (i.e. Boy= B or b).

No work will need to be turned in for spelling; however, there will be an assessment every Friday.
Students who practice their picture sorts at home have a high level of success. The activities on the
back are suggestions of ways your child can practice their picture sorts at home.

We appreciate you helping your child become a successful speller. If you have any questions or
comments, please contact your childs teacher.

Sincerely,
The First Grade Team
