Who I am
My name is Mr. Dylan McCafferty and I will be leading your Academic quest this 2017-2018
school year. I hold a BA in Political Science and a BA in English from the University of Calgary,
and attained my BEd from the University of Victoria.
I am very excited to welcome your child to Mt Royal school this year and complete this next
stage of your childs journey. This year promises many fun adventures as well as a surplus of
clubs and sports teams for your child to take part in.
I myself am coaching the Boys Basketball team.
I truly believe in experiential learning and have many fun and educating plans for your children.

Classroom Expectations
Respect: For others, materials, classroom, community and self.
Citizenship in Learning: Homework and review to be completed daily. Assignments are to be
submitted by the due date. If an assignment cannot be completed on time, student should contact
teacher prior to the due date to discuss an extension.
Punctual and regular attendance: Students will be required to make up for missed class time
and/or work.
Positive Attitude: toward learning, peers, teachers, and school community.
Work Ethic
Time will be allotted in class to finish work, however there is always the chance for spillover. It is
the students responsibility to complete work on their own time, if they havent during school
hours
There will be some homework projects that will be assigned to be completed at home. It is the
students responsibility to manage their time to complete such assignments.

Memory stick, or access to Google Drive
Pencils, pens, erasers, coloured pencils/markers
Binder with lined paper and dividers to organize notes
Student Planner/Agenda (to be used for all courses)

Text
Social Studies: Our Worldview and Contact and Change (online only)
English Language Arts: A variety of other texts will be explored and created throughout the year within
different genres including narrative fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and television/film.

General Outcomes
In English Language Arts:
1. Oral comprehension: Responding to poems, songs, radio phonics, film, conversations
2. Oral production: Verbally expressing thoughts and opinions while paying attention to word
order, syntax, grammar and English expressions
3. Written comprehension: Understanding the organization of text, identifying main idea,
determining details and annotating a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts.
4. Written production: Expression in writing while paying attention to word order, syntax, grammar,
spelling and English expressions
5. Media Investigations: Through the interaction of the above four domains, students will work
within in a climate of appreciation for the using modern media to showcase learning.

In Social Studies, students will gain knowledge, understandings, skills, processes, values and attitudes in
relation to:
Exploring the Origins of a Western Worldview
Through an exploration of Renaissance Europe, students will demonstrate an understanding and
appreciation of the ways in which the exchange of ideas and knowledge contributed to the
shaping of the worldview of the western world.
Contact Among Cultures in the Americas
Through an exploration of Spanish and Aztec societies, students will demonstrate an
understanding and appreciation of the ways in which intercultural contact impacts the worldviews
of societies.
Isolation and Adaptation
Through an exploration of Japan, students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of
the ways in which beliefs, values and knowledge shape worldviews and contribute to a societys
isolation and adaptation.

CBE has outlined four indicators for performance on each of the 8 stems. In addition to feedback
using the indicator scale, students will receive specific feedback on assignments regarding learner
outcomes.
