COURSE OUTLINE
PROGRAMME
The emphasis of the course is on the understanding of basic soil mechanics behind the use of soil
constitutive modeling in geotechnical FEM like Plaxis. The importance of drained, undrained and DAY 1
consolidation behavior is examined. These principles are then applied to practical geotechnical
problems like deep excavations, pile-raft foundation and slope and embankment engineering 09.00 10.00 : Lecture 1 FEM and Concepts of Plasticity
problems. Some aspects of 3D-FEM analysis will be addressed to allow users to appreciate when : Lecture 2 Mohr-Coulomb and Plasticity
2D-FEM is inadequate, and proper 3D-FEM is needed to solve practical geotechnical problems. 10.00 10.30 : Tea Break
10.30 11.00 : Lecture 2b Stiffness of Soils (Mohr-Coulomb Model)
11.00 12.00 : Exercise 1 and 2 Model Oedometer and Triaxial Tests
12.00 13.00 : Lunch Break
BIODATA 13.00 13.45 : Lecture 3- Drained and Undrained Soil Behaviour
13.45 14.30 : Lecture 4 Introduction to Deep Excavation
Professor Harry Tan Siew Ann was a Colombo Plan Scholar who graduated from Auckland 14.30 15.30 : Exercise 3 Model Propped Cantilever Wall
University with First Class Honours BEng in 1977 as the best engineering graduate of the school. 15.30 16.00 : Tea Break

the geotechnical area of excess pore pressure behavior of marine clay in reclaimed land. He was
awarded the NUS Overseas Graduate Scholarship to pursue his MSc and PhD degrees in DAY 2
geotechnical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, which he completed in 1982
and 1985, respectively. He has been a staff member of the Department of Civil Engineering at the 09.00 10.00 : Lecture 6 Advanced Soil Model (Hardening Soil)
