CAT TWO

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

1. A 200-acre watershed is 40 percent agricultural and 60 percent urban land. The agricultural
area is 40 percent cultivated land with conservation treatment, 35 percent meadow in good
condition, and 25 percent forest land with good cover. The urban area is residential: 60 percent
is 1/3 acre lots, 25 percent is 1/4 acre lots, and 15 percent is streets and roads with curbs and
storm sewers. The entire watershed is in hydrologic soil group B. Compute the runoff from the
watershed for 130 mm of rainfall for (i) AMC I (ii) AMC II and (iii) AMC III conditions.

2. For a given watershed of area 18.2 m2, the observed rainfall from a single storm, and
corresponding stream flow data are given in the following table. Determine the (i) direct runoff
hydrograph, (ii) the φ-index (iii) runoff coefficient (iv) the excess rainfall hyetograph for the
storm.

discharge in, cumes, using (i) the mean-section method (ii) the mid-section method

A 476.93 470.92 2.18
B 477.67 455.16 3.44

D 472.22 458.03 0.05
E 472.41 466.84 0.71

BOC: bottom of piezometer casing, open to subsurface

Fig. Vertical profile through an area with a wetland, dug well, stream, and five piezometers.

Calculate the hydraulic head at piezometers A and B, and the water pressure at the bottom of these
two piezometers. Does groundwater flow in the vicinity of these two piezometers have an upward
or a downward component?

5. Consider the figure below.

The well pumps water at a steady rate of Q = 500 m3/day. Nearby are two observation wells A and
B at radial distances of 10 m and 25 m, respectively. The heads in these wells are hA = 80.0 m, and
hB = 82.0 m. Estimate the hydraulic conductivity, K for the aquifer and predict the head at the
outer wall of the well screen, which has radius rw = 0.5 m.
