Instructions: Attempt all questions. Make reasonable assumptions, if necessary.

Q.l. (a) What is a Unit Hydrograph? State the limitations of"Unit Hydrograph" theory.

(b) What is an "S-curve hydro graph"? State its physical significance.

(c) The ordinates of a 3-hour unit hydro graph are given below. Compute the
ordinates of a 5-hour unit hydrograph using S-hydrograph technique.

Q.2. Answer the following questions very briefly.

(i) What is the effect of catchment shape on peak runoff?
(ii) How does the storm movement affect the peak of a hydrograph?
(iii) What is the advantage of<l> - index over W-index in hydrology?
(iv) Why do we require synthetic unit hydrographs?
(v) What is the advantage oflnstantaneous Unit Hydrograph (IUH)?
(vi) What is the utility of a rating curve?
(0.5 X 6 = 3)

Q.3. (a) Differentiate between "stream flow routing" and "reservoir flood routing"?

(b) The inflow hydro graph readings for a stream reach are given below for which

-1-
the Muskingum coefficients ofK = 18.0 hand x = 0.22 apply. Route the flood
through the reach and determine the reduction in peak and the time of peak
outflow. Outflow at the beginning of the flood may be taken as the same as
inflow.

Q.4. Describe briefly (please answer all parts at one place)
(a) Mechanics of sediment transport in wind erosion.
(b) Difference between USLE and MULE.
(c) Field Strip cropping and Buffer strip cropping.
(d) Hydraulic design of permanent gully control structures.
(e) What is free flow and how the performance of drop spillway is affected if
flow is not free?
(5 X 2 = 10)

Q.5. Design a 200 m long graded bund on a clay soil having 3% slope in an area with
X= 0.5 andY= 2.5. The runoff characteristic of the area show that only 70% of
rainfall results in runoff and intensity of l 0 year RI rainfall for Tc duration is 20
em/hr. Consider grade of the channel: near outlet as 0.2%.
(5)

Q.6. Design a 200m long bench terrace for land having slope of25% for sandy loam
soil. The terrace channel has uniform grade of l %. Consider slope of riser 1: 1,
and standard shoulder bund dimensions. Further assume runoff coefficient as 0. 7
and rainfall intensity for time of concentration duration as 30 em/hr.
(5)

Q.7. Design a drop spillway for the following free flow conditions:
Q = 9 m 3/s, F = 2.0 m and L =3m. Take (Coefi ofDischarge = 1.77)
(5)

Q.8. (a) Determine the distance of full protection from a 10 m high wind break if
actual wind velocity at 15 m height is twice the threshold velocity. The wind
velocity occurs perpendicular to the wind breaks.
(b) Explain difference between contour and graded bund.
(3 + 2 = 5)
