TYPES OF GENERATOR

1. Separately Excited Generator


Are those whose field magnets are
energizes from an independent external
source of DC current.

2. Self Excited Generator


Are those whose filed magnets are
energized by the current produced by the
generator themselves.
TYPES OF SELF EXCITED GENERATOR

1. Shunt-Wound Generator
Thefield windings are connected across or parallel
with the armature conductors and have a full
voltage of the generator applied across them.

2.Series-Wound Generator
In this case, the field windings are joined in
series with the armature conductors. As they
carry full load current, they consist of
relatively few turns of thick wires.

3. Compound-Wound Generator
Itis a combination of a few series and a few
shunt windings and can either be short-shunt
or long-shunt.

GENERATOR
1.Short Shunt
The series field coils are connected in series
with the load, while the shunt field coils are
connected in parallel with the armature
coils.

2.Long Shunt
The series field coils are connected in series
with the armature coils while the shunt field
coils are connected across the series
combination.

EXAMPLE:
1. Ashunt generator delivers 450A at 230V
and the resistance of the shunt field and
the armature are 50 ohms and 0.03
ohms respectively. Calculate the
generated emf.

ANSWER: Eg = 243.64 volts


EXAMPLE:
2. The armature of a 4-pole, 128 slots shunt
generator is lap wound with four
conductors per slot. The flux per pole is
50 mWb. The armature and shunt field
resistances are 0.04 ohms and 50 ohms
respectively. Determine the speed of
the machine when supplying 400A at a
terminal voltage of 250V.

ANSWER: N = 624 rpm


EXAMPLE:
3. An8 pole DC shunt generator with 778
wave connected armature conductors
and running at 500 rpm supplies a load
of 12.5 ohms resistance at terminal
voltage of 250V. The armature
resistance is 0.24 ohms and the field
resistance is 250 ohms. Find the flux per
pole.

ANSWER: = 9.834 mWb


EXAMPLE:
4. A 20kW compound generator works on
full-load with a terminal voltage of
250V. The armature, series, and shunt
field have resistances of 0.05 ohms,
0.025 ohms, and 100 ohms respectively.
Calculate the total emf generated in
the armature when the machine is
connected short shunt.

ANSWER: Eg = 256.126V
EXAMPLE:
5. Along shunt compounded generator
delivers a load current of 50A of 500V
and has armature, series field and
shunt field of 0.05 ohms, 0.03 ohms and
250 ohms respectively. Calculate the
generated voltage. Allow a total brush
drop of 2 volts.

ANSWER: Eg = 506.16V
EXAMPLE:
6. A dc series generator is supplying a current
of 5A to a series lighting system through a
feeder of total resistance, 1.0 ohm. The terminal
voltage is 2500V. The armature and series field
resistances are 18 and 15 ohms respectively. A
30 ohm diverter resistance is shunted across the
series field. Determine the power developed in
the armature of the generator?

EXAMPLE:
7. A compound dynamo supplies a load of
20kW at 400V through a feeder having a
resistance equal to 0.1 ohms. The shunt and
series field resistances are 85 ohms and 0.06
ohm respectively. Determine the total
electromotive force when the generator is
connected long shunt. Assume a brush drop of
1V per brush and an armature resistance of 1
ohm.

ANSWER: Eg = 465.046V
EXAMPLE:
8. A short shunt compound generator delivers
150A at a terminal voltage is 230V. The shunt
field current is 2.5A. The resistances of the
armature, series field and diverter are 0.032
ohms, 0.015 ohms and 0.03 ohms respectively.
Solve for the power generated by the
armature.

EXAMPLE:
9. A separately excited dc generator, when
running at 1200 rpm supplies 200A at 125V to a
circuit of constant resistance. What will be the
voltage when the speed is dropped to 1000
rpm and the field current is reduced to 80%?
Armature resistance , 0.04 ohm and total drop
at brushes, 2V. Ignore saturation and armature
reaction.

ANSWER: Eg2 = 90V

1. A shunt generator delivers 400A at 250V and the
resistance of the shunt field and the armature are 50
ohms and 0.04 ohm respectively. Calculate the
generated emf.
2. A shunt generator is connected to a load that draws
28.8KW, Ra = 0.04ohm and Rf= 48 ohms. If the power
developed in the armature is 106.3% of the power
delivered to the load. Determine the terminal voltage
of the generator?
3. A four-pole shunt connected generator has a lap
connected armature with 728 conductors. The flux per
pole is 25mWb. If the generator supplies two hundred
fifty pieces, 110V, 75W incandescent lamp. The field
and armature resistances are 110 ohms and 0.025 ohm
respectively. Determine the speed in rpm of the
generator.

1. A speed indicating device consists of 2-pole permanent magnet
DC generator with a 2000 ohms DC voltmeter connected across its
terminals. The generator has an armature with 1200 conductors
having two parallel paths and a total resistance of 1000 ohms
between brushes. The air gap flux is 40,000 lines per pole. If the
voltmeter reads 10V, at what speed will this reading indicates?
2. the armature of a 6-Pole separately dc generator is lap wound
with 534 conductors. This machines delivers power to the load at
250V while being driven at 1000 rpm. At this load, the armature
circuit dissipates 640W. If the flux per pole of this generator is 30
mWb, determine the KW rating of the load served. Assume a total
brush drop of 2V.
3. a 4-pole, long shunt lap-wound generator supplies 25KW at a
terminal voltage of 500V. The armature resistance is 0.03 ohm,
series field resistance is 0.04 ohm and shunt-field resistance is 200
ohm. The drop may be taken as 1.0V per brush. Determine the emf
generated.
Calculate also the number of conductors if the speed is 1200 rpm
and flux per pole is 0.02 weber. Neglect armature reaction.
