Semiconductorsphysics
Objectives:
This course presents the physics of solids and physics of semiconductors which are necessary to
nderstand the basic operation of semiconductor devices.

Objectives:
Basicsoffunctionalmaterials(magnetic,superconductors&biomaterials).Provideabasicknowledgeof

Coursecontent:
Magnetic Materials: Introduction of magnetism: magnetic materials (paramagnetic,
ferromagnetic) and spintronics. By using the magnetic material properties, the basics of permanent
magnets,fieldsensorsandmagneticrecordingarepresented.
Superconductors: History, Experimental results, Theoretical aspects, BCS theory, Josephson
effects, High temperature Superconductors. The aim of this part of the lecture is to get a basic
knowledge of extraordinary properties of superconductors, in view of their possible applications and
theirfundamentalphysicalproperties.
Biomaterials: This course will introduce the broad topic of biomaterials. It will touch on the
impactofbiomaterialsinoursociety.Itwillintroducetheconceptofcellmaterialinteraction,andthe
cascade of events associated with it. We will discuss important parameters for the engineering of
biomaterials. Finally it will give specific examples of applications of biomaterials in orthopedics,
cardiology,andtimepermittingtissueengineering.

Objectives:

Groups of 3 students work 6 days (one per week) in a laboratory on a specific experimental setup
actually used for research (typically they have to elaborate some sample and then to characterize it
using TEM, Xrays, Auger, XPS spectroscopy, DSC, etc.). Their work is supervised by a researcher in
chargeofthesetup.Thestudentswriteareportincludingthepresentationandanalysisoftheirdata.
