bicameral legislature

A bicameral legislature simply refers to a particular body of government that consists of two
legislative houses or chambers. In certain variations, a bicameral system may include two
parliamentary chambers. The overall purpose behind bicameral legislature is to provide for
representation for both the citizens of a country, as well as the state legislatures on the federal level
or in the central government of a country or nation. Most federal systems of government will most
likely employ a bicameral system for their legislature.

Make in Mahatashtra

Admitting that the state's rhetoric about making Maharashtra an investor-friendly destination
has not percolated down to the lower levels in the government machinery, the industries
department is planning a massive outreach programme for industries and entrepreneurs.

This initiative, which is aimed at ensuring ease of doing business and attracting the
manufacturing sector, will also see officials acclimatising people lower down in the chain of
authority on various measures taken to lubricate the interaction between the government and
industries. They will also collect feedback and ideas from stakeholders and industries
associations.

Illegal Sand Mining

After environment campaigner Awaaz Foundation said that sand was being illegally mined
from creeks and rivers in Raigad district, the Konkan divisional commissioners office said
that they were preparing an action plan with the help of district collectors to stop it.

In 2014, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had banned sand mining in coastal regions in
many states, including Maharashtra, saying that it was damaging natural ecosystems. In 2016,
the ban was lifted in Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Thane, after the state government
promised the NGT that it will ensure that the mining does not damage the environment.

However, various court orders, including the Bombay high court, Supreme Court, and a
Coastal Regulation Zones notification make it clear that beach sand mining is prohibited
under any circumstances, across the country.
