Model and NC code Generation for simple profile using
Turning Operation
Aim:
To model and generate a NC Code for a simple profile using turning operation in
Master cam.

Software used:
Master cam- X6

Pre Lab Questions:

1. What is the use of operation manager in MASTERCAM?
The operation manager list all operations the current job. This includes both
associative and non-associative tool paths. Use this dialog box to sort, edit, regenerate, and
post any operations
2. What is retracting rate?
The retract rate parameter controls the speed of the retract movement of the cutter, or
how quickly it moves out of the material. The retract rate applies to retracting tool
movements in positive Z directions only.
3. What are flute parameter measures in tool?
It measures the length from the top of the flutes to the tip of the tool.
4. What does minimize tool burial do?
The minimize tool burial is provides tool path optimization that helps avoid tool
damage when cutting around pocket islands with particularly small tools. This option applies
only to Zigzag pocket tool paths and helps to avoid burying a tool in too much stock around
islands.
Turning, Grooving, Threading and Final product
Procedure:
i) Open the software Master Cam X6.
ii) Icon bars and Menu bars appear on the Screen.
iii) To select Metric or Inches go to settings configuration select Metric or Inches.
iv) To represent the cross-hairline Press F9.
v) To represent the Axis Press Alt+F9 (X and Y as default)
vi) Go to Planes at bottom of the screen, select lathe diameter D+ and Z+ so that we can
enter the X values diametrically as positive and length Z as negative.
vii) Select Line end point Multiline Enter the values as
0,0 8,0 12,-2 12,-15 8,-15 8,-20 12,-20 20,-25
20,-35 15,-35 15,-45 20,-45 20,-55 30,-60 30,-75 0,-75
viii) To Create Arc, select Circle option create Arc End Points Enter the values
20,-55/ 30,-60 and enter the Radius as 5 , select the arc which we need and go to
Trimming option / trim the unwanted line .
ix) Press Alt+ O to get the operation manager window.
x) Go to Menu bar select machine type select Lathe default.
xi) We can see machine group-1 in the operation manager window and under this
properties and tool path group -1 will appear.
xii) Go to properties Files select the controller which we want select the output
machine name to NC.
xiii) Go to tool settings enter program name select feed calculation from material
make tick mark in the boxes like assign tool numbers, warn of duplicate tool numbers,
adjust feed on arc move, clearance height, retraction height, feed plane, select starting
and incremental sequence number.
xiv) Select material from the Library.
xv) Go to stock setup properties set the blank size like length, diameter and facing
allowance ok.
xvi) Go to chuck properties select proper chuck, Grip length, jaw parameters ok.
xvii) Go to Menu bar tool paths select the operations and Select proper tools for each
and every operation selected in sequence.
Operations selected Tools selected

Facing T0101 R 0.8 OD Rough Right-80 deg

Rough Turning T0101 R 0.8 OD Rough Right-80 deg

Grooving T0202 R0.1 W1.85 OD Groove Right Narrow

Finish Turning T0303 R0.8 OD Finish Right-35 deg.

Threading T0404 R0.108 OD Thread Right Medium.

After selecting the tools enter the parameters for each operation.
xviii) Facing Entry amount, Rough, Finish and Overcut amount to be entered.
xix) Rough Turning Depth of cut, Leave some stock on X and Z axis as
Finish allowance.
xx) Grooving select grooving options such as single point double point etc., and select
on one or more of the grooves that we need to take.
xxi) Finish Turning It is better to select finish cut after groove, so that it is easy to
remove the foreign materials on the surface as well as on the groove. During finishing
cycle, it is better to select smaller nose radius tool, so that the already left out material
will be removed easily with better finish.
xxii) Threading Threading length to be entered with start and end points.
xxiii) For other parameters go to standards, select the major diameter and pitch given.
xxiv) Finally Go to operation manager window select all operations regenerate all
operations Verify the operations.
xxv) After simulation is over select G1 in the operation manager window generate the
NC codes Save in any one of the drive.
xxvi) Write down the codes generated.
xxvii) The generated NC Program consists of Program number, material selected, operations
selected, Tools selected, Various interpolations used, syntax used for different
operations etc.,
Post Lab Questions:
1. What is shape blending
This representation allows for two shapes to be combined together by "cutting" the
desired parts from each, and "gluing" them together.
2. Define a rough tool path
Use rough tool paths to quickly remove large amounts of stock in preparation for a
finish pass.
3. Define translate command
Use this command to move copy or join entities within the same view (plane), without
altering their orientation, size, or shape.
4. Define mirror command
Use this dialog box to create mirror images of geometric and drafting entities by
reflecting them symmetrically with respect to a defined axis or point

Result:
The model and NC Code is generated for a simple profile using Master cam Lathe
software.
