2. Offered Programs

3. Admission Quota (Recommendation from SNU to NIIED)


Up to 20 persons (limit 3 per country)
2015 KGSP Allocation Quota for Domestic Universities: 327 persons

4. Applicant Eligibility
Applicant and both of his/her parents must all hold foreign citizenships.
* Applicants who hold Korean citizenship are not permitted to apply for this program.

Applicants should be in good health, both mentally and physically, to stay in Korea for an extended
period of time.
* Applicants must submit the Personal Medical Assessment (included in the application form) when
he/she apply for this program, and when its orientation, an Official Medical Examination will be
done by NIIED. A serious illness (For example, HIV, Drug, etc) will be the main cause of
disqualification from the scholarship.
NOT Eligible: those who are pregnant (disqualified upon discovery)

Applicants must be under 40 years of age as of Sep. 1st, 2015 (born post Sep. 1st, 1975).
Those who are above the age limit stated above, will be disqualified from the selection process
Applicants must hold or be an expected recipient of a Bachelors or Masters degree as of
August 31st, 2015. (Applicant eligibility will be rescinded if applicant fails to obtain the appropriate
degree by August 31st, 2015).
Applicants who have ever enrolled in a university in Korea will be disqualified from
applying to the KGSP program. Specifically, an applicant who has previously enrolled in an

undergraduate program, a masters program, a doctoral program including an exchange
program (D-2 visa holders ever) in Korea cannot apply for this program.
Exception 1. Applicant who has experienced an exchange program in Korea only for previous
academic courses graduation, and if it was mandatory for his or her graduation of
degree program; thus could submit official explanation from the attended institution
can apply for this KGSP program.
Exception 2. The KGSP scholar who has graduated or will graduate from a Korean university as
of August 31st, 2015 can apply for this program again only via the embassy if only
he/she holds at least TOPIK Level 4 and obtain another recommendation within the
allotment from the Korean Embassy of his/her respective country of origin (re-
application is limited to one instance).
Applicants who apply for the Masters program must hold a Bachelors degree or a diploma that

is equivalent to or higher than a Bachelors degree.


Applicants who apply for the Doctoral program must hold a Masters degree or a diploma that is
equivalent to or higher than a Masters degree.
Applicants who are expecting to obtain the relevant required degree or diploma by August 31st,
2015 must submit a certificate of degree or diploma expectation, and submit the official certificate
of degree or diploma to NIIED by August 31st, 2015. (If not, disqualified for this program)

Applicants must maintain a grade point average (G.P.A.) of at least 2.64 on a 4.0 scale, 2.80 on a
4. 3 scale, 2.91 on a 4.5 scale, or grades/marks/score of 80% or higher from the previously
attended institution.

* If an applicant does not satisfy the above GPA criteria, he/she will be disqualified from applying to
this program.
* If the transcript is not indicated in grades/marks/scores format, or is difficult to convert into
percentages, attachment of official explanation from the attended institution is required.

O Applicants who have Korean proficiency(TOPIK) or English proficiency(TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS)


may be given preference.
O Applicants who apply for natural science and technology program may be given preference.
O Applicants who are university professors currently in the developing countries may be given
preference.

6. Selection Criteria

(1) Evaluation will be based on the submitted documents including the self introduction essay, study
plan, recommendation letters, transcript and any other additional supplementary materials.
Based on the documents submitted, applicants academic ability, language ability, aspirations
for study abroad, potential societal contribution, and anticipated contribution towards the
relationship between the two countries will be evaluated for the purposes of selection.
(2) Applicants selected from the document review process will be notified to attend an in-person or
a phone interview.

7. Instructions for application submission

(1) Download and complete the Application Forms from the SNU, Office of Admissions website
(http://www.useoul.edu) Notice - Admissions: KGSP Application Guide for Graduate
Students (2015 University Recommendation)
(2) Please note, changes and/or cancellations will not be permitted after the completion of
documentation submission.
(3) Send your complete application packet via registered mail or personal drop-off to the following
address by March. 5th, 2015 (5PM):

Should there be any missing document(s) and/or incorrect or false information on the

application, the applicant may be disqualified from the admission.


If any additional verification is necessary, applicants may receive contact requesting

submission of additional documents for the same.

All documents should be in English or Korean. Documents in any other language should
be accompanied by a notarized English or Korean translation issued by the country in
which the document was originally produced.

Original documents should be submitted. Should they be unavailable, however, copies


must be certified by the originating institution before they are submitted.

8. Duration of Korean Government Scholarship Program

Masters (Sep. 1, 2015 ~ Aug. 31, 2018) : 1yr. of Korean language study + 2yrs of Masters
Doctoral (Sep. 1, 2015 ~ Aug. 31, 2019) : 1yr. of Korean language study + 3yrs of Doctoral
* 2015 KGSP Graduate Students, extension of the scholarship award period will not be permitted after
the completion of their respective degree course (2yrs for MA, 3yrs for Ph.D.)
* If you are granted exemption from the required 1 year of Korean Language Study (by submitting a
TOPIK score of level 5 and or above), your scholarship period will be reduced by the equivalent
length of time.

9. Korean Language Course

1 year of Korean Language Study is required for all recipients of Korean Government Scholarship
at the designated language institution.
If the student fails to obtain TOPIK score of level 3 and or above at the end of the given year, they
will be required to enroll in additional 6 months of Korean language study.
If the student fails to obtain TOPIK score of level 3 and or above even after the additional 6
months of Korean language study, his/her scholarship recipient status and the offered admission
by SNU will be rescinded.
Students who enroll in additional six months of Korean language study will not be permitted

extend their scholarship payment period beyond the designated dates.


Language Institution: Student will be assigned to one of the Institutions designated by
NIIED. Once scholars are designated at the institution, it cannot be changed.
Exemption from the Korean language course requirement: Korean proficiency at TOPIK Level 5
or 6 (with certification).
* Scholars who have surpassed TOPIK Level 5 or 6 must start their degree course without
the Korean language course should obtain permission from NIIED in advance.
* Scholars who are exempted from taking the Korean language course must take their degree
course starting from September 1st, 2015.
* The main language institution placement principle is different area from the finally chosen
university of scholars in order to provide a chance of exploring variable Korean cultures and
immerge on Korean language learning with professional environments for scholars.

10. Scholarship Payment Details

Scholarship Payment Period: Equivalent to the period of invitation.


Payment Details:
- Airfare: Round-trip economy class ticket.
* Airfare for entry will not be provided to scholars who already currently live in Korea for
academic study or employment.
* The fees for domestic travel within a scholars home country and for travel insurance to and
from Korea will not be provided.
* Scholars from China and the Czech Republic will not be provided airfare by NIIED, but by
their country of origin according to the mutual agreements.
- Monthly Allowance : 900,000 won (KRW) per month.
- Research Allowance : 210,000 won for scholars in the humanities and social sciences; 240,000
won for scholars in natural and mechanic sciences, per semester.
- Relocation (Settlement) Allowance : 200,000 won upon arrival (only for scholars from their own
country, not for scholars who already currently live in Korea)

- Language Training Fee : Full coverage
- Tuitions : All admission fees are waived by the host institution (university). The tuition is paid by
NIIED.
- Dissertation Printing Costs : 500,000 ~ 800,000 won, depending on the actual costs.
- Medical Insurance : 20,000 won per month will be provided (limited coverage).
- Special funding for scholars who are proficient in the Korean language (TOPIK Level 5 or 6):
100,000 won per month (commencing from the degree program)

11. Important Notes for All Applicants

Please note, changes and/or cancellations will not be permitted after the completion of
documentation submission.
Dual applications are not accepted. Applicants must apply for this program via one Organization
(Korean Embassy, Domestic University and Korean adoption association). If the applicant receives
recommendation from more than one University or Organization, he/she will be disqualified.
Documents should be presented in their original format. Documents not in English or Korean must
be accompanied by a certified English or Korean translation authenticated by the issuing institution.
Submitted documents will not be returned to the applicants.
Incomplete or incorrect information presented in the application documents may lead to rejection of
the application by Selection Committee and scholarship will be rescinded even after entry into
Korea.
Applicants must accurately complete the health checklist truthfully. All successful candidates must
take a comprehensive medical exam when its orientation. In accordance with the requirements of
the Korea Immigration Service and the KGSP Program, the candidates who are judged to be
physically unfit for this program will not be accepted.

Applicants may submit copies of published papers, if available.


Applicants may submit copies of awards, if available.
Attempting to change schools and or the desired program of study after submission will not be
permitted under any circumstances.
Details of individual admission decisions for applicants cannot be disclosed.
Additional documents may be required from the applicant, based on the policy of the specific
college or department.
Original documents should be submitted. Should they be unavailable, certified copies (authorized
by the originating institution) must be submitted.
The University and/or the desired program of study cannot be changed after submission.
