ABSTRACT

This project critically analyses the theme of Forced Spinsterhood in Anita Desai’s

Clear Light of Day. Clear light of day can be viewed as a novel. It is divided into five

chapters. The first chapter introduces the Indian English Literature, about the contemporary

authors and talks about the emergence of women writers. It introduces the author Anita

Desai, her style and themes of her novels and also gives a short note on forced spinsterhood

with the indication of range of the title. The second chapter deals with the summary of the

novel. The third chapter deals with the theme of spinsterhood in the novel. The fourth chapter

explores the literary review. The fifth chapter concludes with an outlook of the major

findings and gives the scope for the novel.
