Profesor Josh Rovey,

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

August 30, 2017
Dear Profesor Rovey,
My name is Emilio Gordon and I am currently a junior at the University Emilio Gordon
of Illinois. I am extremely interested in your research as I have been M +1 (773) 988 3071
heavily involved in the universitys CubeSat program since freshman year E ergarci2@illinois.edu
and would love to explore a new space rocket for CubeSats! ergordon.github.io

My interest in the field of Advanced Space Propulsion was sparked

when I read about Dr. Whites Alcubierre Drive back in 2011 and drew
similarities to the warp drive from star trek. I grew my passion during
high school through exploration of different technologies for advanced
space propulsion such as ion propulsion and solar sail technology. The
summer of 2015, I conducted research on accelerated life testing of
Xenon Ion thrusters (unpublished) and became heavily involved in the
CubeSat program. My work in the program began on the Attitude De-
termination and Control Systems (ADACS) sub-team where we worked
with the calibration and software testing of the Helmholtz Cage. The
spring of 2016, I started working with the Thermal Simulation sub-team
where I learned new skills to develop software for the data acquisition of
emissivity test using LabVIEW. In addition, I have performed thermal
simulations on the LAICE, CubeSail and CAPSAT satellites using the
NX Space Systems thermal simulator. Though most of my work is on
the thermal team, I tend to branch out into other sub-teams when the
time permits. Through this, I have acquired the skills and motivation to
teach others. In the fall of 2017, I designed the AE199: Introduction to
Satellite Development class, a university credited course. In the spring
of 2017, my course was live with its first 16 students. This will be
my second semester teaching the course. In AE199SAT, students learn
skills necessary for success in the universitys CubeSat program and in
their careers. We cover software such as LabVIEW, CREO, NX Thermal
Sims, EAGLE and many more, all skills I gained in my time with the
CubeSat program.

I believe I have the experience and motivation to be a good candi-

date for this position. If considered, I guarantee I have the skills for
thermal modeling, the organization for project management and the
eagerness to learn the skills for any other available position. If given the
opportunity for an interview, I am positive these traits will show. I am
best reached by email at ergarci2@illinois.edu. Thank you for taking the
time to consider my application.

Sincerely yours,
Emilio G.
