Rebecca Barrett-Fox wrote, Probably the biggest misconception people have is that Westboro Baptist Church
doesnt have a theology and that its anti-gay picketing is inspired by personal prejudice. The church is actually
very careful about rejecting potential members whose motivation is a personal dislike for LGBT people. For
them, the motivation has to be theological, and they are careful to note that Gods hate, which is related to
Gods justice, is not like human hate, which can be selfish.
Note Card Example #2---Direct Quote from the source; since the author is not directly cited in the
sentence, you must place the citation at the end of the sentence. The period goes AFTER the citation,
NOT before it.

Note Card Example #3---summarizing the direct quote from Note Card #1; Authors name noted within
the sentence; therefore, no end citation needed.
Though Westboro Baptist members holding signs about hatred toward LGBT is common, Barrett-Fox
contradicts this notion by stating they believe in what God says and His justice and do not readily trust anti-
LGBT people. **If you read the original quote, you see that the information that Barrett-Fox provides
contradicts each other. Therefore, instead of saying wrote or said, I use contradicts to show that the
information does not match up.
Note Card Example #4---summarizing the direct quote from Note Card #1; since the author is not
directly cited in the sentence, you must place the citation at the end of the sentence. The period goes
AFTER the citation, NOT before it.
Westboro Baptist members declare their beliefs are rooted in their faith and understanding of God and His
word, so it is unlikely they will recruit someone who has personal dislike for LGBT people (Barrett-Fox).
**Note that I placed personal dislike for LGBT people in quotation marks because I could not find a better
way to put that into my own words. This avoids plagiarizing your information. Also, if you place FOUR or
more words in a row and JUST change the word order or use a THESAURUS to change the word, its still
PLAGIARISM.

In Extremism in America on the Anti-Defamation League website, In a telling comment, after Shirley
Phelps-Roper, a leader of the WBC, had screened a documentary about the group in her home prior to its debut
on Showtime in December 2007, she said, The content was good. Anytime we get the word out there that we
are a doomed country - a doomed generation it's a good thing. Every mention of WBC in the media is
considered a victory by the group.

sentence; therefore, no end citation needed.
In Extremism in America, Shirley Phelps-Roper allowed Showtime to create a documentary about her group,
and after she viewed it, she declared it accurately depicted Westboro Baptist and their views about social issues
and Americans doom. **Because I want to focus on what Shirley Phelps-Roper said, I include her in the
sentence because SHE is the one who described WBC, not the writers of the Anti-Defamation League in their
article Extremism in America.
