Colleagues,

The purpose of this letter is to provide an overview of the BSN curriculum revision plan proposal for
Washington State University College of Nursing. The proposal contains the conceptual model for the
team to complete the curriculum revision, a proposed timeline (see attached), and a proposed template
to design new courses (see attached). The following outline describes elements of the proposal,
additional information that is requested, and the proposed consultant process and compensation.

Conceptual Model - Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is the proposed model to complete the
curriculum revision work. AI is a model that focuses on the positive instead of concentrating on
the less desired. This model will allow the curriculum team to select the most positive attributes
of the current curriculum to maintain. AI contains four phases to include: discover, dream,
design, and destiny.
Timeline- The proposed timeline focuses on the work of the curriculum revision team during the
summer of 2015; however, I am open to extending the work into the academic year. Within the
timeline, the outcomes are defined. I am open to providing a report to WSU administration
periodically throughout the project. At the end of the June intensive, the curriculum revision
team will complete the discover, dream, and design process to include a draft of program
outcomes, course titles with curriculum plan, pre-requisites, and course descriptions.
Course Design Utilize the course design table to create individual courses. The table will assist
with the alignment of course objectives with program outcomes, BSN Essentials, and evaluation
methods. Although evaluation methods were not part of the UCC proposal, I recommend that
we incorporate evaluation methods in the initial design process. Without evaluation methods, it
is difficult to know if objectives are measureable and the number of credit hours needed. We
will use the guideline of 1-2 course objectives per credit hour. In addition, we will estimate the
amount of time within class time and outside of the course to determine credit hours. We will
use a standard developed in Europe to standardize college credit. The courses will be in draft
format for faculty examination.

To complete the work, I would like to know more about and request the following.
I would like to know more about:
o History of WSU
o History of nursing program on three campuses
o Philosophy, mission, goals
o Culture of the three campuses and healthcare in the state
o What are the administrative priorities?

o Infrastructure
o Technology resources

o Student body demographics
o BSN faculty demographics education, years of experience in teaching
o Delivery methods face to face, distance, etc.
o What partnerships are currently in place?
I would like to know more about the curriculum revision team. What are the criteria for
selection? What is the size of the team? What are the qualities of the team? Will one team
member be selected as the leader? Will faculty development need to occur?
What resources will be provided to the curriculum revision team? I recommend the following:
o Iswasiw textbook and/or Billings and Halstead textbook
o BSN Essentials
o BSN Essential Faculty Toolkit
o IOM Future of Nursing Report
o ANA Scope and Standards of practice
o Current NCLEX plan
o All current syllabi

development? What resources on curriculum development are available?
o Can we create an electronic file share?
o Do you have a syllabus template? Do you university syllabus requirements?
o What Washington State BON laws and regulations do I need to be aware of?

I look forward to beginning this process with the WSU CON faculty.

Sincerely, Chrissie Perkins

PROPOSED TIMELINE
The following table represents a draft timeline with expected outcomes. The timeline is in accordance with the
Appreciative Inquiry Model (Discover, Dream, Design, and Destiny). The aim is to rebuild a curriculum around what
works, rather than fix what does not work. Timeline will begin when parties mutually agree on contractual outcomes.
