Promotion in Rank 2017

The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader a written narrative summary to

describe the rationale for promotion in rank from Associate Professor to Professor at Bon

Secours Memorial College of Nursing (BSMCON). Over the last fifteen years, I have had the

great opportunity to serve as a faculty member at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing.

During this time I have had a variety of roles to include: Instructor II, Assistant Professor,

Associate Professor, Curriculum Coordinator of Adult Nursing, Curriculum Coordinator of Pre-

Licensure Track, Interim Dean of Nursing, and Associate Dean of Nursing. I have had the great

pleasure to grow professionally in the areas of teaching, academic and professional citizenship

and engagement, as well as, in the area of scholarship. This narrative will provide a description

of my journey since promotion to Associate Professor in 2014 to support my request for

promotion in rank to Professor. The 2013 narrative of promotion from Assistant Professor to

Associate Professor is included in my e-portfolio for reference.

Evidence of Teaching as Service

Since 2013 my areas of responsibility are primarily administrative; however, I have been

able to continue to hone my skills in teaching. Over the years I have had the opportunity to

lead and/or contribute to the development of multiple courses within the BSN program. The

following descriptions will outline my contributions in teaching as service.

First, I am currently developing and implementing the first study abroad course at

BSMCON. NUR 4330 - Rooted in the Past, Standing in the Present, Reaching toward the Future:

Awakening Your Call to serve is a 2 credit nursing elective course. The focus of the course is a

spiritual journey for students to explore the Bon Secours Sisters call to serve to get in touch

with their own journey to serve. Students will prepare for the trip by reading Lead like Jesus by

Ken Blanchard, read about the history of Bon Secours and of France in the 1800s. Prior to the

trip, students will connect on Google Plus to discuss the readings and get to know each other.

The students will meet face-to-face for one class period prior to the trip. The experience will be

approximately 10 days and include a tour of Bon Secours Baltimore hospital and community

works, the Bon Secours Retreat Center, and travel to Paris, France. In France, students will

experience a tour of Mother Potels birthplace, Versailles, the Bon Secours Motherhouse, St.

Sulpice where the original sisters took their vows, a commitment ceremony, and culminate with

a dinner on the Seine River. Students will have ample opportunity to engage in prayer,

reflection, and group sharing. Upon return to the United States students will reconnect in a

face-to-face class meeting and each student will provide a presentation that represents

culmination of their learning.

In addition to NUR 4330, I have had the opportunity to the development of additional

courses. I led a group this past Spring to develop NUR 3116: Population and Global Health. To

support the faculty in the quick timeline to develop this course, I led the creation of the major 4

assignments and rubrics. At this time, I am working with a group of faculty that are developing

NUR 4140: Synthesis of Nursing, a 5 credit course in the pre-licensure curriculum. Specifically,

we are working on developing a 2-credit non-direct care practicum where students work with

executives to propose solutions to real-life projects. In the last year I collaborated with a

colleague to provide more structure and rigor to the NUR 4145: NCLEX Review course.

In years past I have developed and taught a couple of additional courses. In

collaboration with a colleague,we revised and implemented NUR 4122: Nursing Research. This

course was focused on conducting research and was revised to focus more on evidence based

practice. In the RN-BSN curriculum, I developed, implemented, and revised NUR 4230:

Independent Nursing Study. I have taught this course twice over the last two years. Students

typically use the course to prepare for certification exam; however, students have the

opportunity to study a wide array of topics. One student studied pregnancy in different

cultures to support a rural health department where she works.

Teaching as a service is an important component of my role. BSMCON continues to

have very high NCLEX first time pass rates which reflect the aggregate teaching as a service of

the faculty. As the supervisor of full-time and adjunct faculty, I support their teaching and

provide day-to-day guidance and support as needed. In addition, I have encouraged their

development in innovative teaching strategies and required them to set goals that support their

growth in teaching. Items to support teaching as a service are available in my e-portfolio to

include course syllabi, appropriate supportive documents, and descriptions.

Academic and Professional Citizenship and Engagement as Service

In the area of academic and professional citizenship, I have been engaged in service at

the College and in the Bon Secours system, as well as the community. During my tenure at the

College I have served as a member and ex-officio on all faculty organization committees. Over

the last three years I have worked most directly with the Curriculum Committee and the Faculty

Development Committee. This work includes:

In collaboration with my colleagues, the Nursing Operations Committee (NOC) was

developed and implemented to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the nursing

program. The committee includes the Pre-licensure Coordinator, Post-licensure Coordinator,

me, and the Coordinator of Distance Education and Instructional Design. NOC meets once

every two weeks to support the goals of the program. The 2017 NOC goals include:

Over the last three years, I have supported the evolution of the new faculty orientation

program. This program is now called Good Start and is a yearlong program with multiple

supportive layers. In 2017 the Good Start program hit its stride and had great success. For

additional information, a review of the program is provided in the e-portfolio.

At the College level, I serve on the Global Outreach Committee. This committee has

three goals: 1) Focus on Learning - Promote a culture dedicated to active inquiry and

collaborative advancement of knowledge; 2) Focus on Caring - Provide a ministry framework for

positively impacting communities through compassionate service, dialogue, and sustainable

relationship building; and, 3) Focus on Transforming - Build a distinct College Global Outreach.

On this committee I have supported the growth of global outreach to include development of

an annual report, addition of Peru experience, addition of RAM Grundy and Wise, and creation

of a study abroad course. In addition, I have led a group to RAM for the last three years. This

experience is near and dear to my heart. It brings me great joy to introduce students to the

Appalachian culture and provide good help to those in need.

In my role as Associate Dean of Nursing, I have the opportunity to participate in

strategic planning. Just this past month, the Associate Dean of Student Services and myself had

the opportunity to propose a strategy to ensure compliance with a new accreditation standard

as well as strategies to enhance additional College concerns. In addition, I have contributed to

the Noel Levitz student satisfaction action planning to enhance faculty instruction and a

meaningful curriculum. Lastly, I have contributed to proposing expansion of the BSN program

to include increasing BSN enrollment on the Richmond campus and proposing satellite

campuses in northern Virginia and Hampton roads.

In 2015, I was asked to serve as a curriculum consultant for a nursing program on the

west coast. This opportunity provided me with the opportunity to share my expertise in

curriculum assessment and development. Using appreciative inquiry, the program had me

work directly with a group of faculty to assess the curriculum and propose a revision. This

opportunity allowed me to further my talents and skills in curriculum.

In addition to academic and professional citizenship I engage in service for the

community. Presently, I serve in a variety roles at Gayton Baptist Church in the childrens and

youth ministry. Each summer I serve as a camp nurse in a 4 day, 3 night camp for elementary

age children each summer. Details of my academic and professional citizenship are provided in

the e-portfolio.

Scholarship/Contributions to Knowledge Base as Service

In the area of scholarship, I have been able to contribute to the body of knowledge in

nursing. In 2013 I completed a national research study for the purposes of my dissertation

titled Partnership Functioning and Sustainability in Nursing Academic Practice Partnerships:

The Mediating Role of Partnership Synergy. The purpose of this cross-sectional, descriptive

research study is to enhance knowledge about the process by which nursing academic practice

partnerships (APP) generate partnership synergy and sustainability. Descriptive statistics,

correlation analysis, and path analysis were utilized to address the research questions. Through

a peer-review process I was able to publish my dissertation on ProQuest and presented a

podium presentation at Sigma Theta Taus International Nursing Research conference. This

conference is prestigious in our discipline and highly competitive. Approximately 75 people

attended the podium presentation.

In addition to the research described above, I was selected through a peer-review

process to present posters at two nursing conferences. First the Pre-licensure Coordinator and

I were selected to present a poster on NCLEX success at the AACN BSN conference. Second, the

Post-licensure Coordinator and I were selected to present a poster on the RN-BSN curriculum at

the same conference. Third, a student and I were selected to present a poster on her

integrative review topic at the VNA Legislative Day.

In addition publication and presentations, I have provided significant contributions to

multiple accreditation self-study reports. These reports include CCNE, VBON, ACICS, and

ABHES. Details and examples are provided in the e-portfolio.
