Excel Lesson 7
1. Complex formula
2. Order of operations
3. Relative references
Relative references is when copied or filled, they change based on the relative positions of rows
and columns.
4. Absolute references
1. Explain how Excel calculates complex formulas. (hint: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally)
To create or copy relative reference, select the cell where you want the formula to be, then enter
the formula to calculate the value you want. Press enter and the value will be calculated. Select
the cell you want to copy then click the cell you want to copy then press the copy command on

To create and copy a formula using absolute reference, select the first cell where you want the
formula in. Type the equal sign. Then, type the first mathematical operator. Type the dollar sign
then the column letter of the cell you are making the absolute reference to. Type the dollar sign
then, the row letter of the cell you are making the absolute reference to. Press enter, to calculate
the formula. Select the cell you want to copy, then select copy. Then paste it where you want to
paste it.
4. Explain how to switch between relative and absolute cell references when writing a formula.
To switch between relative and absolute cell references just press F4 to switch.
The difference between relative and absolute cell references is relative reference is when you are
using the same type of calculation across multiple rows and columns, and absolute cell reference
2. Why is it important to know the order of operations when creating complex formulas in
Excel?
It is important to know the order of operations when you are creating complex formula because if
you want to check the answer you need to know how to solve it.
