SECTION A (PURE MATHS) ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS.
1. a) Given that α and β are the roots of the quadratic equation , find the value of

9. (a) A particle P moves in the XY plane such that its position vector after t seconds is given as

Calculate the distance from the origin when t = 2 seconds,
Find the initial velocity of P.

A particle (A) of mass 2kg moving with a speed of 30m/s, hits another particle (B) of mass 4kg moving
in the same direction, at a speed of 10m/s. Given that particle (A) moves with speed of 10m/s after
collision, calculate
(i) the speed of particle (B) after collision.

10. a) Given that the Resultant of the three forces = (ai + 4j)N and

(iii) the magnitude and direction of the fourth force. (9 marks)
b) The diagram below shows a wedge with smooth surfaces, having two particles of masses 6kg and 2kg,
connected by a light inextensible string, which passes over a smooth pulley. The string runs parallel to the
surface of the wedge.

b) A cylindrical can of base radius 0.3m, is being filled with water at the rate of 0.9 . Find the rate
at which the water level is rising. (Volume of cylinder = ) (5 marks)
C) Find the coordinates of the center of gravity of three particles of masses 2kg, 3kg and 5kg located at
the points (1, 3), (-2,6) and (3, 2) respectively. (6 marks)

b) A company produces canned dog food of two brands A and B. Given that 30% of the food is brand A
and 70% is brand B, and given also that 60% of brand A produced are of small sizes and 70% of brand B
produced are of small sizes. Use a tree diagram or otherwise, find the probability that a canned dog food
selected at random from the quantity produced by the company,
(i) is a small size of brand B.
(ii) is a small size.
