Horse-drawn carts are a frequent sight on the extensive, well-maintained road network. Potters and weavers
create works of fine craftsmanship with the simple tools of their ancestors. Even at a relaxed pace, all the
attractions of Lombok can be visited in a day. The more adventurous can trade their vehicle for a pair of sturdy
boots for the climb to the summit of Mount Rinjani, a volcanic peak visible from every corner of the island.

An Intricate Mosaic
The fertility of Lombok's volcanic soil and teeming seas have attracted settlers from throughout the archipelago,
creating an intricate mosaic of peoples and cultures. The Sasak, the island's original inhabitants, live primarily
along the east coast and in the foothills of majestic Mount Rinjani. Devout and fiercely proud of their heritage,
the Sasak maintain rich traditions of pottery, weaving, and ceremonial displays of strength and courage, a ancient
culture that has found harmony with the modern age.

Supporting Infrastructure
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Bandara International Lombok (BIL), Lombok's international airport that was constructed to serve the Mandalika
project, is expected to start operations in June 2010. BIL will accommodate all long-range, high-capacity
commercial airliners and will operate in all weather conditions.
FRESH WATER
Three decades of experience operating a resort in arid Nusa Dua allows the management company to guarantee
adequate supplies of potable water under any conditions. With the infrastructure now in place, the Mandalika
Resort will employ the latest water conservation technology to make optimal use of available resources.
36
ELECTRICITY
Lombok currently has adequate supplies of electricity, and capacity will be expanded to meet demand. Indonesia's
national electrical utility (PLN) is also building a dedicated power facility for the Mandalika Resort. The resort
will also maintain independent standby generation faculties to ensure that uninterrupted power is available in
all areas.
TELECOMMUNICATION
Indonesia's excellent telecommunications network is well represented in Mandalika. Voice and high-speed Internet
connections are available through both public land lines and private mobile providers. Visitors may purchase local
mobile telephone numbers at nominal cost.
ACCESS ROAD
A fully paved, well-maintained sixteen-kilometer road connects the airport with the Mandalika Resort.
37
An Integrated Resort
The Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) pioneered the concept of an integrated resort in Indonesia. The
state-owned company, established in 1973, transformed the remote and barren Nusa Dua area in South Bali into
one of the best tourist resorts in the world.
The Indonesian government has now granted BTDC management rights (HPL) over 1175 hectares of land in
Lombok to create the Mandalika Resort Area. BTDC and partners will establish joint venture companies to assume
responsiblity for infrastructure, security, management of common facilities, and liaison with local and national
authorities. Individual investors are given broad guidelines for architectural design and land use, but otherwise
are free to develop their properties to suit their own requirements.
This best of both worlds approach allows investors to offer a comprehensive range of major amenities: a world-
class golf course, marina, convention and sports venues, with minimal capital and operational outlay.
Sustainable
BTDC will draw on decades of experience in environmental protection to ensure that the resort and all component
properties comply with global environmental protection standards. Innovative techniques for water treatment
and recycling, energy efficiency, and waste disposal will ensure that the Mandalika Resort will share the green
certification of the sister resort in Bali.
Natural
The rolling hills that provide a verdant backdrop to the Mandalika Resort have been set aside as a conservation
area. The 3000 hectares are home to many of the endemic species of Nusa Tenggara. A system of trails and
guideposts will open the area for hiking, bicycling, and other low-impact activities.
Secure
Mandalika Resort guarantees safety and security for guest and investor alike. For the guest, controlled access and
stringent security offer peace of mind, especially important for young families. Investors will appreciate the legal
and financial certainties provided by BTDC, a government-backed corporation.
38
Desired Investor/Partner Profile
We invite selected companies with the required financial resources and with prior experience in tourism-resort
or other property development to participate in creating the Mandalika Resort. As partners in an international
resort, investors must be able to draw on regional or global experience and professional resources, and have a
sound financial base. Like Nusa Dua in Bali, the Mandalika Resort will incorporate unified themes of architectural
style, service quality, and general ambiance.
Operationally, Mandalika Resort will adhere to the principles and practices of sustainable tourism. Therefore,
potential investors must demonstrate a solid commitment to environmental responsibility and cultural
sensitivity.
