Overview of Library Lessons

Stage 1 Term 1 .2017

Outcomes

By the end of the term, students should be able to:


1. Demonstrate a good understanding of the library rules procedures
2. Demonstrate how to use Shelf Markers to locate appropriate texts and make good
borrowing choices.
3. demonstrate an understanding of the correct borrowing and returning procedures
4. Demonstrate an understanding that texts are organised in alphabetical order.
5. Identify the title, author, illustrator, spine label and blurb of a book.
6. Identify the 3 sections, and their components, of the library (Junior Fiction,
Fiction, Fiction Picture book and Non Fiction)
7. Gain an enhanced understanding of science concepts from living things unit.

Success criteria: The Library Program, Living Things supported the Science Unit taught
by classroom teachers this term.
The majority of students demonstrated a good understanding of concepts and procedures
covered throughout the term, borrowing regularly and participating in browsing of the
library shelves.
A successful library art display was created as a creative response to literature this
included all stage 1 students.
Encouraging reluctant borrowers was a priority, praising students for remembering their
library bags, tally marks when students borrow as well as praising students for good
choices made when borrowing.
High engagement in borrowing procedures is evidenced by high borrowing rates for stage 1
students.

USING A SHELF MARKER

1) Pick any shelf marker from the box 2) Find a book you like and slide the
shelf marker beside or under it

3) Take the book off the shelf and 4) Go and read the book quietly to see
