Update and Review:

My cognate for Fall 2017 is focusing on 1st year students and their needs
being a first- year student at a University. Spring 2017 I did a lit review
in Dr. Gradys class on it. I will use that as part of my paper for the
Cognate + a Reflection at the end of it.
My goal as a future educator is to teach first-year students beginning
English courses, which in my experience usually are reading and
writing. I think it would be exciting to help them connect reading and
writing and finding one aspect they may grow to love about literature!

Above is my Weebly link. At the top is says Cognate, which will

take you to different links on my cognate. Everything is set up there
for this project of mine and anything needed for it! It also has links
to previous work of mine throughout my educational career at SSU.
It is under some construction as it has been a work in progress, but
feel free to roam around and get a sense for where my passion is and
what my cognate signifies.

Hello Everyone!
Thank you for being on my committee! I am so grateful to have all three
of you join me on this wonderful journey and the end of my Post- Grad
career. I have set in motion a lot of the items listed below. These are
mostly things I will be doing and what month they will be done in! Only
things that will need to be attended by you lovely three are: the GSO1
meeting early September (crossing my fingers my DR will have me on
the up and up by then!). The GSO2 meeting should be end of November
or December, Dr. LaDuke will keep me posted on that.

A. Use lit. review from Dr. Gradys 586 class to build from
-The paper is in Jens Weebly, which focuses on first- year
students needs at University for language courses
B. Contact faculty at SSU and JC to have them fill out survey on 1st

Would it be beneficial? The Cognate will be uncovering this question.

September/ October

- What were the gaps coming from HS to college?
C. Student survey/ interview:
Goals: - What do they see as their strengths?
-What are their needs for English classes/work?
-Did they have prep in HS for college literature?
-Share text-set with them>> Would it be beneficial for
them in college?

November/ December
Cognate Product
A. Revising my text-set on resilience using new found knowledge
B. Create new text-set on student health advocacy using new found
knowledge
C. Reflection:
1. What I thought a text-set should look like
2. What direction was my text -set taken? (needs and strengths?)
3. What are Jens next steps and ideas for her teaching future?
Thank you for your time!
Feel free to e-mail me any questions or clarification needed.
