Keeping parents informed through consistent communication is extremely

important. According to Iowa Teaching Standard 1: Demonstrates ability to enhance

academic performance and support for implementation of the school districts student

achievement goals, teachers must have a plan to keep parents informed. At Mark

Twain Elementary School, the parents are informed of expectations, consequences,

and specific goals that are being addressed in the special education classroom. For

example, in one particular case, a parent is called if the child does not complete a

specific task in a certain amount of time. After the call, if the child still has not

cooperated with the teacher, the parent is called again and has to come to the school.

The hope is that the parent will follow through and enforce those expectations. The

parent and teacher essentially work as a team to provide the best learning environment

for success. Another way parents are informed at Mark Twain Elementary is through a

folder for each student. For example, the teacher keeps a log in the folder with notes

about what the student worked on in class, and what the student should work on at

home. This allows parents to be updated daily on what their child is doing in class, and

allows for a better relationship between the teacher and parents.
