CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

We use the conditional when we are saying that an action depends on another action. These actions or
situations can be real or imaginary. Normally, these sentences come with the conjunction if or the
modal verb would that we use to build the conditional of the verbs. There are different types of
conditional sentences.

ZERO CONDITIONAL
We use this kind of conditional when the condition that takes places and the result are always true, the
result always comes true if the condition takes place. We use it specially with scientific facts. With this kind
of conditional sentence we can also use when instead of if.
Ex:

If you heat water to 100C, it boils. Water boils if you heat it to 100C
Si calientas agua hasta los 100C, hierve. El agua hierves si la calientas hasta 100C.

When you dont clean your room, your mom gets mad. Your mom gets mad when you dont clean your room.
Cuando no limpias tu habitacin, tu madre se enfada. Tu madre se enfada cuando no limpias tu habitacin.

FIRST CONDITIONAL
We use this kind of conditional to talk about the future, about actions that will probably take place. To
build this conditional we use the condition in present simple and the result in future simple. We may also
use modal verbs instead of the future simple.

If + condition in present simple + result in future simple

Ex:

If you heat water to 100C, it will boil. Water will boil, if you heat it to 100C
Si calientas agua hasta los 100C, hervir. El agua hervir si la calientas hasta 100C.

If it doesnt rain, we will go to the park. We will go to the park if it doesnt rain.
Si no llueve, iremos al parque. Iremos al parque si no llueve.

If you are good, I may give you a prize. If you tell me the secret, I could help you with your test.
Si eres bueno, a lo mejor te doy un premio. Si me dices el secreto, podra ayudarte con tu examen.

SECOND CONDITIONAL
We use this kind of conditional to talk about desires or dreams, things that are almost impossible to
happen in the present or the future. To build this form we use the condition in past simple and the result
with would + infinitve.

If + condition in past simple + result with would+infinitve

Ex:

If I were taller, I would reach the ceiling. I would reach the ceiling if I were taller.
Si fuera ms alto, llegara al techo. Llegara al techo si fuera ms alto..

If you lied to me, I would be very dissapointed. If they went there, I would see them.
Si me mintieras, estara muy decepcionado. Si fueran all, yo les vera.
THIRD CONDITIONAL
We use this kind of conditional to talk about a condition that could had happened but didnt. To build
this conditional we use the condition in past perfect and the result with would have + past participle.

If + condition in past perfect + result with would have+past participle

Ex:

If you had seen the movie, you would have seen the best movie ever. If I had known that, I wouldnt have eaten it.
Si hubieras visto la pelcula, habras visto la major pelcula de la historia. Si lo hubiera sabido, no lo habra comido.
