Socially: small tribes; very lineage oriented
Politically: ruled by family/group leaders; family was the social interaction one knew
Economically: very little production; moving with the seasons and living day to day; pretty
much no economy

Farming
Maize: Native American corn whose cultivation changed Native American culture
Cultivation starts with the Inca and Aztec people
Crop growing slowly gained momentum

Life After Farming


Socially: small, crop-growing settlements with hunter/gatherer mentalities
Politically: alliances; leaders; more interaction
Economically: popular crops (beans, maize, squash) were produced and exchanged

Great Basin: Pueblo people
Rocky Mountains: Ute and Cheyenne
Great Plains: Sioux
Mississippi River: Mound Builders
Appalachian Mountains: Cherokee
North East: Iroquois Confederacy
Native Americans were sparsely spread across the land
Countless tribes
Over 2,000 separate languages were spoken
Isolationism was a major factor in Native Americas lifestyle
