Toodala Orff LessonMUE 41310/24/17

Purpose: Students will be able to sing the tim-ka (dotted-eighth sixteenth) rhythm with
instrumental accompaniment.

I can statement: I can play instruments while my friends sing. I can sing while my friends play
instruments. I can sing while playing instruments. (The last of these is for the ambitious child.)

Materials: plan, Toodala (see source on previous weeks plan), glockenspiel, claves (or other
small hand-holdable percussion, xylophone (in F Major)

Procedure:
I) Review Song and Add Bordun
a. T: Does anyone remember the made-up word in our song from last week?
b. Take answers, or if no one remembers, sing song once and ask again
c. If they did remember, then sing the song once to get the melody in their ears
d. Everyone sing it and keep steady beat
e. Sing and change steady beat to walking hands alternating, resulting in eighth
notes that start on the right hand
f. T: Are hands are going to move left and right this time. Listen and watch for
how they move.
g. Say this chant and move hands accordingly:
walking walking walking walking
inside inside back to normal
walking walking walking walking
left hand left and back to normal
h. T: What different directions did my hands go? Take answers.
i. T: Listen again for what is the same and what is different between the two
phrases?
j. Say chant again and take answers
k. Everyone say chant and move hands accordingly
l. Pick a volunteer who wants to try it on xylophone, tell them to start on an F in the
left hand and a C in the right hand
m. T: What notes will you play for inside inside? and take answers
n. T: What notes will you play for left hand left? and take answers
o. Xylophone player plays while everyone else chants and does the hands
p. Now everyone sings and xylophone player plays
q. Repeat, but have xylophone play choose someone and teach their part to that
person before singing and playing
II) Adding the Color
a. T: Listen to how the song is different. Xylophone player, you can play while I
sing. Sing as below. Pat lap on Black and floor on Red.
Mighty pretty motion Toodala-la
Toodala-la Toodala-la
Mighty pretty motion Toodala-la
Toodala-la lady
b. Take answers then everyone sing with Toodala-la and patting
c. Repeat a couple times and switch xylophone players occasionally
d. Take a volunteer for Glockenspiel
e. T: When we pat our laps, play F. When we pat the floor, play C. If you have two
of each note, play two Fs then two Cs. Otherwise, just play one F and then one
C. (This is to accommodate for the Glockenspiel potentially missing bars.)
f. Everyone sing and pat as xylo and glock play
g. Repeat and rotate players
III) Adding the Small Percussion
a. T: Listen to the new change to the song. Glock and xylo play along. Sing Too-
kookoo-dala instead of Toodala
b. Everyone sing with Too-kookoo-dala while glock and xylo play
c. Switch glock and xylo players and sing again, but clap on kookoo
d. Take volunteer to play claves or whatever small percussion instrument is
available
e. Sing and play all parts
f. Repeat a couple times as necessary to solidify parts
g. Play song twice through without stopping

Assessment: Teacher will be observing as students play to see if they understand the rhythmic
and melodic components of their part while listening to the singing to evaluate the integrity of
the tim-ka rhythm.
