Tutorial 4: Ideal Gas

1. Under what conditions is the ideal-gas assumption suitable for real gases?
2. What is the difference between R and Ru? How are these two related?
3. What is the difference between mass and molar mass? How are these two related?
4. A 1m3 tank containing air at 25C and 500 kPa is connected through a valve to another
tank containing 5 kg of air at 35C and 200 kPa. Now the valve is opened, and the entire
system is allowed to reach thermal equilibrium with the surroundings which are at 20C.
Determine the volume of the second tank and the final equilibrium pressure of air.
(Answer: 2.21 m3, 284.1 kPa)
5. A 400-L rigid tank contains 5 kg of air at 25 C. Determine the reading on the pressure
gauge if the atmospheric pressure is 97 kPa. (Answer: 972.1 kPa)
6. A rigid tank containing 5 kg of air at 100 kPa and 27oc. The air is heated until pressure
increases by 2 times. Determine the volume of the tank and the amount of heat
transferred in kJ. Take R=0.2870kJ/kg.K ; Cv=0.718 kJ/kg.K ; Cp=1.005kJ/kg.K
(Answer: 4.305 m3 ; 1077kJ)
