Activity 1.
Show complete solutions. Round off answers to the 2nd decimal place.
1. A rigid 1.3L-vessel containing a gas of mass 5.8 g at 22°C and 986 mmHg. What
change in temperature will the gas experience if the pressure will be tripled?
2. A sample of chlorine gas at STP is placed inside a 4-gallon glass jar. What would
be the volume if the gas is brought to NATP conditions.
3. A gas mixture at 379 K is contained in a 350cm3 container, determine the system’s
initial pressure when its pressure is 2.1 bar if it is brought to 425 K and the volume
is reduced by 5 in3.
4. Air in a room that has a floor area of 120ft2 and height of 10ft has a pressure of
121.6 kPa, what would be the dimensions (LXWXH) of a room if the pressure of air
is decreased to 96.2 kPa?
5. Calculate the density of a gas mixture composed of 30% Oxygen, 50% N2 and 20%
CO2 that at 88 °F and 22 psia.
6. Argon is confined in a 2.4-gallon vessel, determine this mass of Argon at normal
room temperature condition and 33.8 inHg.
7. Calculate the molar composition and partial pressures of a gas mixture that is
28%wt CO2, 12%wt CO, 5%wt water vapor, 30%wt N2 and the rest O2 at 28°C and
112 kPa.
8. Natural gas is normally composed of methane, ethane, propane, and traces of
other gases. A natural gas of 94% methane, 4% ethane and 2% propane at 70°F and
40 inHg is in a 5m tall, 2m-diameter tank.
