PHYSICAL EDUCATION LESSON PLAN DEVELOPMENT 2

Animal Stretching

Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools Kindergarten:

Standard 1: Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a
variety of physical activities.
1.4 Create shapes at high, medium, and low levels by using hands, arms, torso, feet, and legs in a
variety of combinations.
1.5 Create shapes by using non locomotor movements.
1.6 Balance on one, two, three, four, and ve body parts
Standard 2: Students demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies
that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
2.3 Identify and describe parts of the body: the head, shoulders, neck, back, chest, waist, hips,
arms, elbows, wrists, hands, ngers, legs, knees, ankles, feet, and toes.
Standard 3: Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and
performance.
3.5 Stretch shoulders, legs, arms, and back without bouncing.

Background Information: Children must understand that when stretching you will feel a pull
on your muscles, when you feel that pull stop and hold for some time. Students should know
basic body parts. Also students should know different animals.

Group: small group 3-9 children or large group 10-25 what you are able to handle.

Objective: The students will be able to manipulate their bodys to stretch muscles.

Materials: animal cards, plenty floor space, moon music, and a book. My first yoga: Animal
poses By: Abbie Davies

Procedure:
Review- students will need to know basic body parts, such as arms, legs, elbows and
knees.
Overview- students will be learning that our bodies can be manipulated in many different
ways if we know how to move them.
Presentation-
1. Gather students in a group and have them sit down. Discuss and demonstrate how to
breath in through you nose and out of your month.
2. Read book to children. My first yoga: Animal poses
3. Explain to the students that our bodies can move many different ways.
4. Ask student to find a square to stand in. (you have taped squares on carpet before you
start your lesson.)
5. Play music show the animal cards to the children and ask them to move their bodies
into the position like the card.
6. after all cards have been shown to the children ask them to sit in their square

Discussion Questions:
PHYSICAL EDUCATION LESSON PLAN DEVELOPMENT 3

1. What animal are we shaping our bodies into?

2. What sound does this animal make?
3. What part of our bodies are we using to make this animal?
4. How do we know we are stretching our bodies?
5. Who would like to share what animal stretching did they like the best? / and why?

Evidence of Learning: The evidence would be in watching the children move their bodies into
different shapes. The images of the children manipulating their bodies will show concrete
evidence that the children learned the objectives.

Next Step: If the children meet the objective add more complex animals for students to shape
their bodies into.
If the students did not meet the objective teach the lesson one more time next week.
