So if they are, but are not, forgiving, what does that

on some of the language, is that they reject forgiveness
as we conventionally understand the term, Dr. Klein
said. They are offering us another way to understand
forgiveness.
They reject the conventional idea of forgiveness,
which is conditional. When you accept somebodys sin-

cerely apology, you are obligated to forgive. That is some-
thing they cannot do.
Conventional forgiveness means that you are forgiving
both the criminal and the crime. What these writers do is
decouple the crime and the criminal. They continue to
focus on the crime, which they never forgive, but they do
begin to rethink that criminal.
They understand that it is a form of forgiveness to
begin to recognize the humanity in the criminal, even
though they condemn the crime.
All that does sound like the Christian notion of hating
the sin but not the sinner. It is pretty conventional in St.
Augustines thinking, but it is different, Dr. Klein said.
Augustines approach is to remember the sin but let it fade
a bit; to concentrate on the sinner to begin to form what
he calls a common good, bringing society back together.
Therefore, Augustine downplays the sin part.
But the survivors never forget the sin, and they never
downplay it. They can never get rid of it.
It is the manifest narrative of their work.
Still, though, they still look for something in the crimi-
nal that they can reconnect with, Dr. Klein said. And to
me that is a very honest way to forgive.
He cannot say if the three men are typical, he con-
tinued, but he does know that they were very much of
their time and place. They talk about their loneliness

Should it be a place where dedicated educators refine
the methods that have been handed down to them, con-
stantly updating them while retaining their core? Or
should it be a place where old ideas are thrown out whole-
sale and replaced by new, 21st-century-understandings?
Should it be a place where those approaches somehow,
despite the apparent impossibility, are combined?
And what exactly should a Jewish high school educa-
tion be? How do you add the Jewish component? Do you
have to subtract something, or divide something, or does
the Jewish content simply add? Does it multiply the effect?

Neither did anyone in the room, and the modera-

even though the topic already had been exhausted. Just
mentioning Charlottesville in nearly any other Ameri-

much discussed in the community, about the boldness
of anti-Semitic expression during the presidency of

Nicolet said Israelis likely were aware of the Char-

because it was a more insidious form of anti-Semitism.
Its very easy to define the Nazis, he said. They
have the flag. Theyre Nazis. When you have a gray

cleansing, from a gut feeling Im worried.
Anxieties about whether American Jews are growing
distant from Israel also permeated the conference. Ruth
Calderon, a former Knesset member for the secular

talmudic teachings into secular Jewish education, said
the diktats of Israels Orthodox could cause a schism.
She led a session that transitioned between Hebrew
and English.
At some point, the Jews in the world will say to

words, figure it out for yourself.
Israeli Jews also recoil at the notion of even tolerating

Mohammed, 32, was named crown prince by his
father, King Salman, in June. That in itself was an
upheaval, as succession had been an opaque, delicate
process aimed at preserving balance among the welter
of descendants of the kingdoms founder, Abdulaziz.

rattled the extended family.
Already the defense minister since 2015, Crown
Prince Mohammed moved quickly to make clear he
was in charge (his father is ailing). He placed his pre-
decessor as crown prince under house arrest, talked
repeatedly about modernizing the kingdom, and
made good on a promise when his father decreed that
women may drive.
This weekend he rounded up another 11 princes

Irans war, Americas shame, in Kurdistan

They meant it as an insult,

Israel has sustained its
democracy amid regional con-
ditions that would make most Americans and Europeans
balk at the thought of being in the same position, and a
sovereign Kurdistan would be an invaluable partner sim-
ply through sharing basic liberal norms like freedom
of expression, freedom of worship, full civil rights for
all ethnic, national, and sexual minorities in a Middle
East that largely is contemptuous of such trifles.
Yet even though almost 93 percent of voters in the
Kurdish referendum opted for a sovereign Kurdistan,
the end result has not been a second Israel but a sec-

For the last fortnight, Iraqi Kurdistan has borne the
