Brief Description of Nokia BSC3i:

Nokia BSC3i is based on modular software and

hardware architecture. The distributed
architecture of Nokia BSC3i is implemented
with a high-capacity and redundant
multiprocessor system - the DX 200
Computing Platform. The system enables the
distribution of processing capacity to several
computer units with dedicated tasks.

FUNCTIONAL UNITS OF BSC
OMU (Operation and maintenance unit)
MCMU (Marker and cellular management unit)
BCSU (Base station controller signaling unit)
GSW (Group switch)
CLS (Clock and synchronization unit)
ET (Exchange terminal) Catridge
OTHER UNITS:
A) PDFU (Power distribution frame unit)
B) FTRB (Fan Tray)
UNITS
Computational and Non Computational

Computational Units [Units that have a processor

in them.]
1. OMU
2. MCMU
3. BCSU

All other units in the BSC are Non computational

Units.
OMU
It acts as an interface between BSC & OSS also it performs
the function of collecting statistical data.
Functional parts of OMU
Data storage device
WDU (Winchester disk unit) i.e. WDU0 & WDU1:
The data storage capacity of WDU is 80GB
FDU (Floppy disk Unit)
The FDU consists of MOD (Magnetic Optical Disk)
the capacity of which is 9.1GB
CPU: (Central processor unit):
The CPU consist of CP710-A card
The CP710-A board is a Mobile Pentium III with 800 MHz
frequency.
MBIF: (Message Bus interface):
There are two MBIF cards of which one is working &
other is in hard standby mode.
Functional parts of OMU
HWAT (Hardware alarm terminal)
This card collects the External as well as internal
alarms coming from BSC & transfers it to OMU
SERO (Serial output)
The function of transfering the data from OMU to the
external printer port is performed by this card.
AC25: (Adapter for common X.25 signalling link)
This card acts as connector between BSC & the
transcoder (TCSM)
AS7: (adapter for CCS7 signalling)
PSC6: (Power supply for cartridge)
Supplies power for each unit of OMU

[NO REDUNDANCY FOR OMU]

MCMU
(Marker & Cellular Management Unit)

The Marker and Cellular Management Unit

General purpose marker functions
Radio resource management functions
The marker part
Controls the 8 kbit/s Bit GSW (GSWB/GSW1KB)
Performs connecting and releasing of the circuits.

* MCMU - The most critical unit of the BSC *

MCMU ARCHITECTURE
FUNCTIONAL UNITS OF MCMU

SWCOP: Switching and control operation

processor:
A cross connector which supervises the
group switch.
ESB2, ESB3 (Ethernet switch for B-SERIES)
This card supports direct IP connectivity to
BSC from the OSS
The functions of CPU, PSC6 and MBIF0, MBIF1
are same as OMU.
Redundancy: 2n
BCSU [Base station Controller Switching
Unit]
Provides LAPD (Link Access Procedure/Protocol
for D channel)
Supports both A interface & ABIS interface
A single BCSU can handle 110 TRX.
Minimum configuration of BCSU is 2. (i.e. one is
working & other in spare)
Maximum configuration is of 7 (i.e. 6 is in
working state & 1 in spare mode)
BCSU ARCHITECTURE
Functional Units of BCSU

1. PCU: Packet control unit

It supports GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) and
Enhanced data rate for GSM/Global Evolution
One Physical PCU contains two logical PCUs
(NSVCI [Network Service Virtual Connection Identifier]
and GPRS)
One PCU supports 64 BTS and 16 DAP
2. AS72 supports three types of signaling:
X.25 Signaling, ABIS Signaling and A interface signaling
3. The functions of CPU, PSC6 as well as MBIF0, MBIF1 are
same as OMU.

[Redundancy: N+1]
GSWB [Bit Group Switch Unit]

Acts as a mini exchange .

Conducts signaling part.
Mainly responsible for speech and data.
Transmits buffer.
SW64B card :
(2 mbps) 64 E1 for input and (2mbps) 64 E1
for output.
GSW unit is controlled by SWCOP card which is there in
MCMU.
[Redundancy: 2n]
GSWB ARCHITECTURE
CLS
Clock and synchronization unit
CLS unit takes 13MHz clock from the MSC and
distributes it to the ET card.
It also generates different tones for the mobile
subscriber.

This unit works on hierarchical synchronization mode,

when both the unit fails, BSC refers to the internal
clock which can be set by Oscillator control word.

[Redundancy : 2n]

SYNC PRIORITIES

*BSC Uses Hierarchical Synchronization *

2. ET Cards
Priority 1 : ET 32
Priority 2 : ET 160
Priority 3 : ET 96
Priority 4 : ET 224
2. External inputs
3. Clock and Synchronization Unit

ET Exchange terminal
There are two types of E1 terminators.
75 ohm termination (coaxial, asymmetric)
75 ohm ET is terminated to ET port using
SNB connector

ET Exchange terminal

120 ohm termination (Pair, Symmetric)

120 ohm ET is terminated using BNC
connector
[Bayonet Neill- Concelman ]
ET Cartridges
PDFU (Power distribution fuse unit)
FTRB (Fan Tray)
PDFU distributes the -48V/-60V DC power from
the site power system to the cartridges
through the distribution cables.
PDFU also contains the fuses for these cables,
along with alarm circuits for the incoming
voltages and its own fuses

[Redundancy: 2n]
PDFU
FAN Tray (FTRB):

Fan tray unit is used for maintaining the

temperature of the cabinet within the
predefined limit.
