DKG ~ Nu Chapter Minutes

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International

Chapel in the Hills, Wimberley, TX

October 17, 2017

Nu Chapter of the Texas State Organization of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met on Tuesday,
October 17, 2017 at 5:30p.m. at Chapel of the Hills, Wimberley, TX for fellowship followed by a regularly
scheduled meeting. President Sandra Morales and Secretary Cheryl Blake attended. A quorum was
established.

Members in Attendance: Sandra Morales, Tonda Frady, Loretta Eiben, Debra Zupancic, Cheryl Blake, Carol
Plassmann, Karen Franco, Ruth E. Spear, Brenda Butler, Gracie Rocha, Nelda Reyes, Peggy Hilburn, Connie
Martin-Thompson, Delores Cruz, Janis Brown, Barbara Hollis, Bonnie Flammang, Jenny Turney, Kathy
Martinez-Prather, Sue Thompson, Tonya Rhodes, Nadyne Gartman, & Clem Cantu. Initiates: Alice Castillo,
Clarissa Talbert, Peggy Parker Whitaker, & Delia Cruz-Fernandez. Guests: Ann Rowlings & Laura Zunker

President Morales welcomed and thanked everyone. An inspirational reading followed by Frady. Everyone
enjoyed a festive meal provided by the San Marcos Ladies.

President Morales called the meeting to order at 6:00p.m.


Guest Speaker Rowlings was introduced by Zupancic. Rowlings spoke of the creation of the Emily Ann
Trail of Lights and Butterfly Day. Spreading the word through her daughters memory. The ground is
rich, come plant with us.
Recording Secretary Blake submitted the September 19 minutes were accepted as posted online
Treasurer Frady reported a balance of $2641.26. Chapter dues are due and a budget will be created
for the November meeting.

Committee Chair Reports

o Membership: Turney reported that we would be initiating four new members tonight and one
member was being reinstated.
o Ceremonies: Rocha reported that she would be conducting the Initiation Ceremony tonight with
members of the committee.
o Programs/Projects: Eiben reminded members to pick up their yearbooks. Reyes informed members
that DeZavala students would be receiving their books next week. She also asked for volunteers to
the DeZavala Read with a Hero Day.
o Communications/Yearbook: Gartmann asked members to please read their newsletters for updates
on member information. Please double check your personal information and send her corrections if
necessary.
o Nominations: Turney reported that the end of the Bienumin is coming soon and we will be looking
for new officers for the 2018-2020 Bienium. Please consider an office and respond with a yes when
asked. Voting of new officers will be in February.
o Old Business
Christmas Trail of Lights, Wimberely: (Trail of Lights, Emily Ann Theater) Morales & Blake shared our
ideas of DKG Impacting Education Worldwide. Ornament ideas were shared. Members will host the
Hot Chocolate and Marshmallow roast on Nov. 28. Saturday, October 21 will be craft day to work on
our exhibit. Childrens books are still needed.
Tri-Chapter Social: Franco and Rocha have agreed to co-chair the social. Members were asked to sign
up for tasks. Ideas for the meeting were shared. Members will be providing salads and desserts.

New Business

Hurricane Harvey Aid: Turney & Flammang reported that they donated teacher supplies to Rockport.
Teachers are still in need of many basic supplies.
Newsworthy: Cantu and former member Charlotte Evans have been honored by the City of San
Marcos for women of meaningful contributions.
Members were updated on the status of many members.
Birthdays: October birthday winner was Cantu.
Raffle Basket: Spear announced that the raffle basket collections were for Schools for Africa. Cantu
won the raffle.
Tshirts: Turney has announced that someone needs to take over the tshirt ordering or members will
have to order on an individual basis.
Next meeting: November 14, 2017, Chapel of the Hills, Wimberley, TX

Adjournment: President Morales adjourned the meeting at 7:20p.m.
