LISTENING AND HEARING


Webster defined listening in a number of ways: means giving ear, giving heed,
hearkening, or hearing with attention
HEARING means having the sense of faculty of perceiving sounds and does not imply
comprehension of the sounds perceived.
Listening involves comprehension assumes the ability to hear, but hearing does not assume the
ability to listen.

We have two ears and only one tongue in order that we may hear more and speak less.

LISTENING: AS A COMMUNICATION SKILLS


Listening is one of the most important communication skills
We probably spend more time using our Listening Skills than any other kind of skill
Like other skills, Listening takes practice
Real Listening is an active process
Listening requires attention

EFFECTIVE LISTENING
Effective listening skills are the ability to actively understand information provided by the
speaker, and display interest in the topic discussed. It can also include providing the
speaker with feedback, by asking pertinent questions so the speaker knows the message is
received.
Effective Listening is a skill using multiple senses to comprehend the message being sent
by the speaker.
KEYS TO EFFECTIVE LISTENING

L - Leave all worries behind.


I - Ignore all distractions.
S - Stay close to the speaker and start listening on the first sentence.
T - Take important notes and get the central idea.
E - Evaluate the inputs or notes taken.
N - Notice non-verbal cues.
I - Involve yourself actively.
N - Neutralize your emotions and reactions.
G - Give the speaker and his speech a chance.
