LUMIDAO, ANALYN ENGLISH FOR IELTS

CTE – 3C MR. JAYSON CARL ESMASIN

While listening to the recorded discussion I have learned that listening became part of our
lives. It is considered as the most essential skill among the four macro skills simply because it
requires us to make more time than the other macro skills. It is considered as the first language
skill that humans develop. As we grow older our listening skills tend to improve. We must
develop our listening skill as we grow older because if we do not develop our listening skill, it
will have a domino effect on the other macro skills. Listening is the process of receiving,
constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and/or non- verbal messages. As the
discussion goes by, I have learned that as we listen there are certain things that are involve the
first one is that when we listen, we are the receiver and our task is to decode the message then
afterwards we need to understand what the message is all about and lastly, we need to give
feedback for the listening to become more effective. One way communication is not considered
as effective listening.

Moreover, before the discussion I have a little confusion between hearing and listening. I
think those two are quite the same but as I continue to listen to the discussion, I have learned that
they are different. Hearing is simply the act of perceiving sound by the ear. It is also considered
as the involuntary movement which occurs with or without consent. While listening is an action
where you choose to actively concentrate on what you hear.

Another thing that we need to keep in mind is that effective listening will make us nail
the IELTS Examination. Aside from defining what listening and hearing are, and knowing what
the process of listening is, tips to get high listening skills are also discussed. Those tips are
essential for all the IELTS examiners. One of the tips that really caught my attention is “trust
your ear” since listening skill was the first skill that we developed. We need to trust what we
hear just like how we trust our guts. Trusting ourselves will let us be confident in everything that
we are going to do.
