Learning Targets/Objectives:

The first grade students will identify safety features in the classroom and on the playground by
using their growing observation, gross-motor, and language skills.

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
- Students should be familiar with the rules of the classroom that keep them safe. Before
the lesson, the class will go over the rules of the classroom again.
Key Vocabulary:
- Fire Extinguisher a metal container filled with chemicals that is used to put out a fire
- Fire alarms a device that makes a loud sound to warn people when there is a fire
- First aid kit a set of materials and tools (i.e. band aids, wipes) used for when someone
is hurt
Content/Facts:
- Fire extinguishers are used to put out small fires.
- Fire alarms are in every classroom and room in the school to detect a fire and let
everyone know to evacuate the building.
- Fire aid kits are used for when someone is injured to clean and wrap their injury.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
Hook: Ask the students to raise their hand if they have ever gotten hurt playing on a
playground. Then ask why safety in the classroom and on the playground is important.

Development/Teaching Approaches
Before Activity
1. Teacher will explain that the lesson for the day is observing and discussing the safety
features of the classroom and on the playground.
2. The students will form a circle on the rug and we will sing a song in the tune of
Where is Thumbkin? but instead say Where is (childs name)? to make the
students aware of their classmates and to look out for one another.
During Activity
1. The students will walk around the room and point out safety features, such as fire
extinguishers, emergency exits, fire alarms, and first-aid kits as they pass them.
2. The teacher will discuss fire safety with the class.
3. The teacher will ask the class what they should do if there is a fire.
4. After touring the classroom, the students will go take a tour of the playground and
discuss safety tips. i.e. I see the swings. What safety rules do we need to follow on our
swings?
5. After touring the playground, the class will discuss the places they explored.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
After
1. The students will recap what they learned and point out the safety features in the
classroom.
2. The students will complete a foldable for their science notebooks.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
If a student is in a wheelchair, the class will get to the playground by taking the easiest way for
the handicap student. i.e. ramps, elevators
