Reflection

Community service is such an interesting activity a person could ever do in his life. He should
embrace and make it a passion as he is growing up. Can everything be learned in the four corners of a
classroom? No. There also is the magic of learning outsidein the community. Community service will
give a person an epiphany that not all families are given the means of procuring the needs in their
everyday life. It also immerses him to the lifestyles of these less fortunate families. It gives him an
appreciation of community involvement and thus resulting in him being grateful of everything he has and
urges him to give more. Not only should he do it because it is required in one of his subjects but also
because it gives him a sense of fulfilment and responsibility. This should be his realization. If only every
one of us bears this realization in his mind and heart, what a much fitter and more people-friendly this
world could become.

Our group, along with the other one, was assigned in Caritas Phase I, Brgy. Bajumpandan. When
we first got there, children of different ages immediately gathered around and welcomed us. Though their
smiles could almost reach the heavens, a trace of something is obviouspoverty. What a disheartening
sight! These children are a few of the legion of faces of poverty in the country. We taught the children the
basic mathematics, English, catechism, and other subjects that suit in their age and present knowledge.
We also conducted games and of course, the feeding program. We had a lot of fun with the children. That
might be the thing they say that money cannot buy. I admit, what we did was not enough to help those
children in their situation, it would be their first step into taking their studies more seriously. I believe
education is the only thing that can never be taken away from us.

We all seek to make the world a much fitter world and to eventually make the less fortunate get
away from their pitiful situation. However, we are on their side only to guide and accompany them
towards achieving it. The final step is theirs to make. In the end, it is their dream that will get them out of
their situation. The dream that sparks passion, passion that sparks hope, and hope that sparks change.
