CVL 500: Introduction to Structural Engineering

Assignment No. 3
Due Date: Week of October 31 (During Tutorial Hours Only)

1) - Figure below shows a steel cross-section fabricated from two back-to-back, C310x45 steel
channels, welded to one plate, 20 mm thick x 260 mm wide. Determine:
a) - The section moment of resistance about the two centroidal axes, x-x and y-y, assuming
the beam section is subjected to a negative bending moment. All steels are G40.21
350W grade.
b) The section moment of resistance about x-x axis only assuming the beam section is
subjected to a positive bending moment.

2 A steel floor framing plan has simply supported beams at their ends and consists of beam B1 that is
laterally supported throught and beams B2 and B3 that are braced at supports and mid-span. The
specified loads are: LL = 4.8 kN/m2 and DL = 3.5 kN/m2. The steel is G40-21-M 350 WT. Assume the
deflection limit is L/240.

a) Using equations, design beams B1 and B2.

b) Using CISC tables, determine the lightest W-shape beam for B3.

3- A built-up steel cross-section is shown in the figure below. It is fabricated from G40.21 350W
steel. Determine the section moments of resistance about the two centrodial axes of x-x and y-
y.
