The Olympic Games were first held in Olympia in ancient Greece to honour the Greek god Zeus. These ancient Olympics began in
the year 776 B.C. and continued until 392 A.D., that is, for more than 1,000 years. Only male athletes competed in these games.
They competed in different sports activities, but there were competitions also in poetry, music and other arts. At the beginning
and end of the Games, animals were killed and offered to Zeus. When people stopped believing in the Greek gods, the Olympic
Games were cancelled. The Olympic Games were brought back in 1896, when the first modern Olympic Games were held in
Athens, the capital of Greece. Only nine countries with about 250 athletes participated in these first modern Games, and again
all the athletes were male. Today, about 10,000 athletes from about 200 countries compete in the Olympic Games, and nearly
half of them are women.
