PLC Goals:
1. Create and integrate one higher level thinking question per lesson for level 1 to ensure consistency
within the department and enhance students' critical thinking skills as they relate to language and
culture.
2. (Not on IGDP) Create a pacing calendar for Spanish 1 blocks and skinnies.

Admin Comment: Like the higher level questioning and the reference to the critical thinking. Good start
here.

1. Kaitlin McNary (new Spanish teacher at Horizon) had some questions for us about the 8th grade
advanced class. We discussed whether she should push through the main topics for Spanish I and II
or if she should slow down the pace. We decided it would still be best to cover everything and that the
placement test would get students to the right course here at the high school. Well talk to her about
some grading options.
2. We planned our first common assessment. Rigo, Lana and Melissa will use the lesson 5 vocab quiz.
Lisa doesnt have a level II class this semester.
3. We discussed strategies for helping our struggling students in level II. Each of us were able to provide
some helpful tips for working with the students we had last year in level I.
4. We talked about the technology conversion and will provide feedback to Mike K. Lisa has one of the
new Chromebooks and has found it to be an extremely challenging and limiting change. There are
several things she cant do on the Chromebook that she could do on her Mac. Shes also found that
there isnt an easy solution to be able to type accents on the Chromebook. This will be a challenge for
us and for our students.
5. The EM Fall Drive-In was mentioned and we found some of the sessions to be particularly interesting.
We plan to attend the sessions on social media and cell phone use. There has been a lot out on
national news about issues that have come up for school districts and universities regarding social
media and cell phone use. Hopefully the sessions will be informative for us.
6. Lisa and Melissa were disappointed to find that their sound fields had been removed from their
classrooms. Although it is an essential accommodation for hearing impaired students, it is a helpful tool
for all students who have attention problems.

Admin Comment:
Looks like the meeting was very productive - planning assessment, sharing strategies etc. Keep up the great
work!

1. Rigo shared a review for the common assessment that will be given tomorrow in Spanish 2.

2. We discussed students in our classes with gender identity issues & how we have handled some issues in
the past when teaching various topics such as pronouns: how do we refer to the student as He or She in front
of the class when practicing the Spanish pronouns. Then how much do we need to know about the person &
how much do counselors/parents know? Etc.

3. Worked on our first Higher Level Thinking Question for our PLC goal. Lana shared some wonderful
materials: We will be doing a mark the text reading on Da de La Raza (Day of the Races in Mexico/Central
America/South America) with a scaffolding sheet of questions taking students from When did Chris Columbus
sail to Why do some people believe that we shouldnt celebrate Columbus Day? We just need to refine an
Essential Question for the unit, which were all working on before next PLC.

Admin Comments:
Very interesting topic concerning gender identity. You have a unique issue here as you teach pronouns in
another language where other classes do not. I would suggest reaching out to Joni Hubrig, the school social
worker who also advises our lgbt group - she would have some great suggestions for you to tackle this issue in
class. Thank you!

1. Our own Rigo Castilln is one of the Round Table Discussion Hispanics in the US at Concordia for the
celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month tomorrow night. We will be offering extra credit to any students who
go to any of the activities for Hispanic Heritage.

2. Melissa shared the district interest in concurrent enrollment and what the various options are in MN. MANY
high schools schools in MN have concurrent enrollment for Levels 3 & 4. TImeline: 4-5 yrs for implementation.
Thoughts:
* Concurrent enrollment classes sound very interesting and fun for Spanish
* Not too excited about Transfer curriculum - we are not sure how this would affect the future of language
electives/ all electives. Would our high fliers stop after the required class & not continue to build a level 5
(which we can only offer every other year at the moment)?
3. Discussed various Marking the Text for the buildup of the Dia de la Raza critical thinking question. And we
will do our next common assessment on the writing assessment of the critical thinking question.

4. Staff Development Request: Could we PLEASE have Jean Sando present at one of our early starts on
Reading? She has presented at many state conferences, and weve never heard her. Plus, many of us need
Reading Credits for renewal.. Por favor!

Admin Comments: Good conversations here, thanks to Rigo for being part of that discussion. The concurrent
enrollment conversation is a big one right now. There are a few things that have to be straightened out at the
state level. We are (have been) working on getting Jean to present on Reading. Hoping to get that finalized
soon.

Great reflection and great results! If a student doesn't come in for help (for example, if their family situation
does not allow them that opportunity), have you brainstormed how else to reach students to help them?

1. Discussed Grade distribution for Level 1 blocks and skinnys - the students who are failing are students
are who have high absences from school. Otherwise, we all seem to be having a very successful year
so far. Weve all been very pleased with our classes and their level of interest.
2. Rigo and Melissa shared information about the seminar they attended last Friday. They brought some
interesting ideas back about oral testing and practices. But on a larger picture - Katelynn (who is the
Spanish teacher at Horizon) has many questions about next year, and is having an issue with the
students in the immersion prep course:
3. What is happening with the immersion program as 5th grade is moving into Horizon next year, what is
going to happen with the classes? Is it going to stay the same as a separate entity, or is it going to be
moved into the true middle school concept? And how is this going to affect the students currently in the
immersion program? So many questions and Katelynn says no one has any answers yet at Horizon.
We need to talk with Missy about the plans because this will have an effect on our program going
forward.
4. This year, the students in the prep course are doing very well, but both parents and students have
developed a different idea of this course this year. The past couple years, weve just used it to help
place immersion in the proper class up here. This year they are looking at it as almost a punishment - if
they dont pass the placement test high enough to get into level 3, they feel its going to set them up for
their future careers! Its gotten totally overblown, so Melissa talked a lot with Katelynn about how this is
just a tool to help them get placed where theyll have success - not a t est. Since Lana has a daughter
in this class too, she was talking about the high stress level the kids are having about this. We need to
continue to support her with this!
5. Lana shared a table of contents page she created following the interactive notes training for the
vocabulary and note packet .
Admin Comment: Interesting conversations about the program in the middle school. Hopefully you can find
the answers you need! Thank you for supporting her and let us know if you need anything from us.

1. WONDERFUL presentation by Dr. Sando this morning! We discussed some of the things she presented
and how the foreign words have a similar effect as new words in English. We need to do some research on
how to help students with this
2. Travel - where, when, who will lead, etc. All on hold now until the school board discusses all major
magnitude trips. But we need to find a trip and have our ducks in a row so we can move on it quickly if/when
the school board is going to approve trips. And were waiting for the meeting with our administration and other
departments about issues/answers from all of our trips.
3. Next common assessment: Wed like to see feedback from our 2nd common assessment (on Columbus
Day/Da de la Raza) to see what we might need to improve upon before we create another compare/contrast
assessment to help with critical thinking skills. Looking at Venn Diagrams to think about the school
environment between schools here and schools in Mexico. OOPS - we have ILT after Thanksgiving, so we
wont be able to use this for a common assessment this year. But we are still going to do this activity to work
on our IDGPs.
4. Common assessment will be the Lesson 5 Exam in level 2. Discussed questions/sections which need to be
changed or reformatted.
5. Look for a text on schools in Mexico/Latin America to use.

Admin Comment: Good discussion here, we will definitely need to work through the details of any trip, same
with any other department in the building. See below for comments on the 2nd common assessment.

Assessment #2 Admin Feedback

Very good topic for the students to write about, I am actually not surprised there was a knowledge gap here.
Your reflection on the writing skills is excellent. Glad to see you could make a connection between their
writing in English and their performance in Spanish. Having students write and using strategies like Marking
the Text is exactly what we are hoping to see more of. Students really need to be taught how to better read and
summarize material.

1. Looked at some of the resources for the comparisons between Mexican and American schools. Not finding
much reading material.. A power point, some videos, some photos, so research is still continuing. We were
surprised that readings are not readily available even to just describe the school system in Mexico. To be
continued
2. Pacing discussion. What are the essential elements for lessons 3 & 4 in level 1, and 7 & 8 in level 2? These
are set and are good, but how much time are we spending? What can be shortened or cut out? This happens
every year - we know the timing and the calendar, but it always seems to end up as a rush at the end. One of
our IDGP goals is to work on our pacing calendar - so we are going to begin reviewing it to see what we to
adjust before 2nd semester and the new blocks start.

3. Students are asking about starting a Spanish Club. Pros: develop cultural themes - dancing, movies,
potlucks, etc. Cons: no late bus, all the extra-curriculars, etc.
4. Could we have start a Spanish Honor Society. Its part of the AATSP (American Association of Teachers of
Spanish and Portuguese. Well start looking into this.

5. Bring calendar/lesson plans to next PLC to work on block pacing again.

Admin Comment: Great discussions! The procedure for starting a Spanish Club can be discussed with Mr.
Lawrence. We do not affiliate with the National Honor Society (their membership 'dues' have increase
exponentially in the past year and MHS has not been in that organization for some time). I'm sure you can do a
very informal group, however, through your professional organization.

Gracias for the information on starting a club & about the NHS!

1.Worked on the level 1 curriculum mapping. Looked carefully at how we taught (are teaching) each lesson
this semester for the block classes.

2. Here how we are modifying the pacing for next semester for the level 1 block:
Lesson 1 - cut a week off! Complete in 4 weeks. Introduce Me, Te, Le gusta in the ice breakers and
recognizing cognates.
Lesson 2 -
Split the Gustar unit. Teach the singular forms early in the chapter with the -ar verb infinitives. Then
they can learn the meanings of the -ar verbs while playing with I like, I dont like . Introduce the plural forms
of the verb gusta vs gustan. Show Nos, Os, Les - but dont test on it.
Numbers - focus on 1 -1000. Work with years for the upper numbers, then just show big numbers to
show the pattern.
Question words - leave Cundo, cuntos, cul, adnde. Theyl be integrated in different chapters with
verbs that they can contextualize them. To where are you going? How much does this cost?, etc.

Next week: Look at Leccin 2 test & start working on the rewrite of Gustar, Numbers & Questions.

Admin Comments: reviewed by Principals.

1. Lesson 7 exam - paragraph section needs to be rewritten.

2. Discussion of students who are failing & how they dont work in class, dont come in to make up to make up
tests, dont do the extra credit option, wont even come in during the 10 min before class to get directions, etc.
They are failing, and we feel pressure when a message comes from administration is there anything you can
do to pass these students. Its a frustration when we work continually with these students all quarter - they
put in little to no effort - and then we hear the message to try harder.
3. How can we get students to do more content time outside of class? We have given up a lot of the culture to
make sure the vocabulary & grammar is mastered. Discussed assigning Quizlet - but theres no way to check
for work. The Supersite (our text on-line component) does record scores, etc., but it is set up more as a
workbook without the repetition needed for this age group. Something we need to examine going forth.
4. Rigo has student who transferred in from Fargo is in Spanish 2 - but has already covered everything weve
covered so far in Span. 2 skinny. Melissa & Lana are questioning how the skills of our students are so much
lower compared to their old schools - we all question how we have more experience, more methods, work
harder, and dont get the results we used to get elsewhere. Lisa explained how much content time was lost
when we moved to modified block. We lost 18% of our content per level by moving to block. Plus we lose
another 360 minutes of class time due to Wed. schedule We know why we cant go back to a 55 min. - 6
per day (too many state graduation requirements which cut out too many elective opportunities), and we dont
want to give up PLC time. But it is frustrating to have to compare our Level 3 students to other districts Level
2 students. At least we dont have to beat ourselves up anymore about becoming poor teachers/losing our
skills/etc. We just need to keep pushing students to keep taking the upper level classes so they can succeed
at college and/or on their college placement tests.

Admin Comments: In regards to how to reach students, how much communication is attempted with
parents? Are you able to invite parents into talk to you? These are high schoolers but sometimes they do not
act like it and need to be "told on" so that their parents understand what is going on. In regards to having kids
do more content time outside of class, are there any apps a student can use that will give them some practice
or some learning about Spanish on their own time? Any spanish language apps that are "disguised" as
games? We have an interesting generation of learners right now that we've not seen before. In regards to item
#4, keep plugging away - you're doing GREAT with what you have!!! Thank you for that!!

We began discussion of our next trip. Looking at locations closer: Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Mexico. And also
looking at different companies since we will not be doing a home stay on this next trip. We need to check on
whether we would have to use personal days or if conference days could be used since this is professional
development for the teachers who travel too.

We have a $250 grant to spend on bringing in a speaker or something for a cultural experience. It would be
great to have a salsa instructor come in or something on that order.

Discussed pacing in Level 1 Skinnies: Were all in different spots, but we will all end up testing next Friday ;-).
Weve covered the chapter in different orders of topics, but were finishing at the same time.
Revised Lesson 2 Test changing the word bank on the Question word section. Decided to keep the gustar
section & we will add a practice in the review in the same format to make sure they are familiar with the

Rigo & Melissa demonstrated Circling questioning technique to scaffold our questioning techniques for
introducing new verbs and question words. Its taking our basic questioning techniques to the next level. Very
useful!!!

Created our Critical Thinking question for Lesson 2 using Costas Levels: C
hoose 3 aspects of schools in
Spanish-speaking countries that you would like to see implemented in American schools. Write a 3 paragraph
essay explaining why.

Admin Comments: I LOVE that you shared & used the Circuling Questioning technique - GREAT job bringing
that into your lessons! Focusing your scaffolding on Costa's is a great road to stay on as well! Keep up the
good work bringing in more strategies!!

Retooled Lesson 3 quiz on Family members and Lesson 3 exam on Family members. Removing the test
questions that deal with mother-in-law, etc. and replacing with more relevant terms like step-sister. Were
keeping brother-in-law/sister-in-law because there is a cultural point Rigo shared with us. When a couple have
been dating awhile, the family refers to the boyfriend/girlfriend as brother/sister - in - law. So well teach those
words pointing out the cultural use - 2 standards in one!
Discussion on the meeting with Lynn & Missy about international travel & board approval. Since there still isnt
a decision on how major magnitude travel will work, we are going to plan a trip to Puerto Rico - which is a
territory of the US - and travel during the summer of 2018. Traveling in the summer, we wouldnt need board
approval & we can work out the details of the meeting places, advertising, etc. once the district decides on
what we can/cant do.

Budget was just sent to us, and spending must be done by March 1st. We each have a whopping $137.68 to
spend.

We heard the videos for electives were not shown at the 9th grade registration meeting. Parents were referred
to the links, however a lot of parents simply wont go through them all and that is our moment to let future
students know were here. Since there are no handouts being given out this year either, we have a large
chance of missing our contact information with the incoming families. We really need the elective videos to be
shown - this is our chance to keep our departments growing.

Next Friday is the next common assessment. We will look at the Lesson 2 test that we just revised and see
how it went. But, from seeing the students taking the test, we dont feel it went as well as expected.

Getting quotes for a trip to Puerto Rico in June of 2018. We need to keep looking at other companies.

Excellent reflection. How do you determine that test question wording is the reason for the low scoring rather
than how the content is taught? Thank you! There are 2 sections on -ar verbs on the test. They do well on one
section, but the other section combines -ar verbs and two other irregular verb forms. Since they do well on the
quizzes for each of the irregular forms, and they do well when it is separated out on the exam, but when all 3
topics are combined into a paragraph form, students over-generalize or just get confused.

Our salsa instructor has moved to Jamestown but is very willing to come back to teach our kids some latin
dancing - this brings in our standards for Community and Culture. Well be setting a day up in April or May.
These are the 2 most difficult standards for us to include in our classrooms:
Cultures - Gain knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures

Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and
perspectives of the culture studied.

Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and
perspectives of the culture studied.

Communities - Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home and Around the World

Standard 5.1: Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting.

Standard 5.2: Students show evidence of becoming lifelong learners by using the
language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.

Next common assessment is the end of March. We will use the Lesson 5 Exam. We discussed our pacing &
we are all over the place with the new blocks, so we are now aware of it and were working to pull it together in
the next couple weeks.

Admin Comments: Josh is actually an awesome Salsa Dancer, you may want to dip into his expertise. I

Discussed students who are behind due to absences & how are we going to help them get caught up before
the end of the quarter. Unfortunately, most of these students have not been coming for help nor putting effort
into getting makeup work - let alone doing it. We are posting a deadline for all makeup work on our boards
today so kids can see their time is limited!

Worked on modifying the problem sections on lessons 7 & 2 exams. We concentrated on keeping the rigor up,
but making it more understandable for the students by changing phrasing, or completely rewriting a paragraph
without losing the emphasis that theyre testing on.

QUESTION: Are the incoming 9th graders coming with their chromebooks? Is 9th grade going 1:1 next year?
Our concern is how do we use them with our classes being mixed levels. We have 9 - 12 taking Spanish in all
levels.

Melissa will be sharing the text inventory for a current update. Its also time to do a video inventory again - its
been a few years.
Common assessment is for Lesson 5 this time.

Admin Comments: Good idea on posting the deadline for everyone to see, at some point there has to be a
cutoff.
8th graders will have the option to buy their chromebook after this year, but we will not be going 1:1 in our
building at this time. There is a great deal of talk taking place about the technology in our building, but we are
not ready for that step yet. We need a better plan before moving ahead with that.

A very difficult meeting - we spent a lot of time going over pros & cons of how to handle our high enrollment
without additional staffing. We decided (after also listening to Scott this morning about making connections) to
cut the additional sections. It breaks our hearts to see the program growing like this, and not being able to
accommodate all the kids. But we cant have larger classes than the 30+ already scheduled in (just for space in
our rooms, let alone class management) and make it a successful learning experience for all. Then also the
parents and district might see that if we are growing, we need support and additional staffing to serve our
students!!

Worked on critical thinking questions for our goals for the year.
Question 3 - use the movie Selena to broach the topic of identity (a wonderful scene with Selenas father
discussing the issues of being a Mexican-American & the fact hes both but has to work to fit into either group)
Include this quote for the students and discuss:
How did Selena work on spanning her different world (examples: singing in Spanish but cant speak it,
pronunciation of her name is different in the two languages.)
How did her dad bridge the cultural split when he was young?

The Identity project: Create a poster to show the groups they identify with and write how this is a part of their
identity.
Example - Rigo would include a Mexican flag and write that he is Mexican heritage and that heritage is very
strong in his life.

-OR-

American culture: What is culture? What are the pieces that make up a culture? Think-pair-share then put
list on the board

Think through these two ideas & work on a template for our next PLC.

Next PLC:
Finalize Question 3 & begin Question 4. Also Level 3 Final Exam needs to be reworked since we changed the
lessons covered this year.

We went through the Level 3 Final Exam and found the things that we need to correct or replace since we
changed which chapters are being taught in which level. Melissa offered to make the changes (since she has

Inventory has been completed by all.

Lisa came up with a Critical Thinking question for Lesson 3. And we all added some more to create the next
activity. In lesson 3, we talk a lot about cultural differences and family relationships. The critical thinking will
be write a letter to an exchange student explaining four of the strongest things that describe the American
culture and how it might be different from their culture.
Our Critical Thinking goals will finish in lesson 4 (sports and pastimes) with the topic of bullfighting which is a

keep our computers over the summer or have to turn them in sometime in June - and not get a new one until
the fall. If you hear of any news on this, wed all love to know!!

Level 3 final is updated and ready to go. Level 2 final needs to have a few things updated yet. Level 1 is good
