Abstract
John Shaw Elementary School is a school that is part of the Matanuska Susitna
Borough School District. This school is a National Title I Distinguished school; meaning it is
included in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that provides additional funding and
services to schools, students and their families from low-income status. John Shaw Elementary
boasts a student population of approximately 445 students with more enrollments predicted as
the school year progresses. The school serves a community with a diverse population. In the
classroom, there is a total of 20 students, 11 boys and 9 girls. This particular group of students is
full of many learning opportunities, and is the lowest mathematical skill group in the fifth grade
level. The learning goals identified for the students are that students will compare and convert
customary units of measurement and utilize these acquired skills to solve multi-step, real-world
scenarios in measurement. The pre- and post- assessments are in the form of fill-in-the-blank
quizzes that address all the necessary skills to solve a measurement conversion problem. During
this unit, students were able to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts via hands-on
activities and packets during instruction. Student acquisition and competency at the culmination
of the unit was presented as a learning gain score of 34%. Students were successful with the
learning goal of measurement comparison and conversion, with applications in solving real-
world scenarios.
