Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Hannah Fruitt Date: 12/3

Grade and Topic: First Grade Math Fact Families Length of Lesson: 100 mins.

Mentor Teacher: Professor Johnson School: U of M

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson comes from a unit discussing the subject of fact families. When the lesson is over students
will understand that you can make four math facts with the same three numbers on certain occasions.
These three numbers can make two addition and two subtraction facts.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given the Fact Families YouTube video, students will answer a fact families questionnaire with 100%
accuracy.
Given three numbers, students will create a Christmas present fact family with 100% accuracy.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Tennessee State Standard 1.OA.C.5- Add and subtract within 20 using strategies such as counting on,
counting back, making 10, using fact families and related known facts, and composing/ decomposing
numbers with an emphasis on making ten (e.g., 13-4=13-3-1=10-1=9 or adding 6+7 by creating the
known equivalent 6+4+3=10+3=13).
ISTE Standard #4- Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects,
solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.
a. Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation
b. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project
c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions
d. Use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions

MATERIALS:
iPad
YouTube Krys and Kai teach Fact Families
Fact family questionnaire
Microsoft Word
Technology will be used in this lesson to review the fact family lesson that was discussed last week.
Students will view the YouTube fact families video on iPads and use the information learned in the
video to answer a questionnaire. Once they answer the questions, they will complete a Christmas present
fact families box that they construct on Microsoft Word.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will be able to write out two addition and two subtraction facts using three numbers that are
able to create four facts.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
The fact family lesson connects with previous lessons that involved addition and subtraction. It builds on
these lessons because now students can see that sometimes have just three numbers can give you four
math facts.
I will build on this lesson by giving the students a test on fact families to evaluate what they have
learned from the YouTube video and the fact family Christmas Box web project.
I understand that this lesson along with others will need modifications for diverse learners.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:
Good morning class! Today we will be looking at the family we looked at last week. This family has
three people in it. instead of people though, this family has numbers in it. Who can tell me what this
family was called that we talked about last week?
We will review how having just three numbers can give us four math facts. These three numbers will
give us two addition and two subtraction problems.
Today I want us to review this lesson by watching our friends, Krys and Kai, teach us about fact
families and show us an example of a fact family. I want you to partner with the person sitting at your
table with you to watch the video on your iPads through YouTube. Once the video is over you and your
partner will answer the question sheet.

Closure:
10 minutes: Now that we have done two lessons on fact families, you all should know how to
do these well enough to have a test. We will be having a test on Friday. To get ready for the test, lets go
over the answers for the questionnaire you all filled out after watching the fact family video. (go over
answers for questionnaire, letting students ask questions)

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
There will be two formal assessments in this lesson. These assessments should be completed with 100%
accuracy. (A score of all threes.) The first assessment will be the Fact Family Video Questionnaire. If
students get more than two answers wrong they will need to redo these questions and provide the correct

through Microsoft Word. A summative assessment will follow later.

MODIFICATIONS:
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this
particular lesson.
Fact Family Activity Packet:

Hello First Graders! Today we are going to do an

activity with fact families. I am going to have you
and your partner watch Krys and Kai tell you what
fact families are and they will show you an
example of a fact family. Once you and your
partner are done watching the video you will
answer the five questions below together! Good
luck!

Answer: Three numbers that make up four math

facts. A fact family makes two addition and two
subtraction facts.

2.What are related addition facts?

Answer: two math facts that add up to the same

number but the two small numbers switch places in
each of the problems.

3.What are related subtraction facts?

Answer: Two math facts that have the same big first
number but different second numbers and different
answers.

4.What three numbers did Krys and Kai use to make

their fact family?

Answer: 5, 3, and 2
5.List the 4 facts Krys and kai made.

Answer:
a. 3 + 2 = 5
b.2 + 3 = 5
c. 5 - 3 = 2
