Change History
Updates between document issues are cumulative. Therefore, the latest document issue
contains all updates made in previous issues.
Issue 01 (2012-05-30)
This is the first commercial release.
The EPC network is intended to provide high-speed packet data services. It has a less
complex network structure than current core networks, with the following differences:
l The eNodeB can access the EPC network directly. RNC functions are integrated into the
eNodeB.
l The functions of the network elements (NEs) in the PS domain are adjusted as follows:
The SGSN signaling plane and forwarding plane are separated. The MME
implements the function of the SGSN signaling plane and the S-GW implements the
function of the SGSN forwarding plane.
The P-GW functions as the GGSN.
The optional co-design of S-GW and P-GW is supported.
l The EPC network allows multiple RATs, including non-3GPP access technologies such
as CDMA2000 high rate packet data (HRPD). See Figure 1-2.

1.1.3 NE Functions
The functions of the major NEs in the EPC solution are as follows.
E-UTRAN
E-UTRAN implements all functions related to the radio access:
l Establishes and manages radio resources.
l Compresses packet headers and encrypts user plane data.
l Selects an MME when no MME can be identified based on information provided by
UEs.
l Implements uplink bearer-level rates based on the UE aggregate maximum bit rate
(AMBR) by using uplink scheduling and maximum bit rate (MBR).
l Implements downlink bearer-level rates based on the UE-AMBR.
l Controls uplink and downlink data access.
l Marks uplink packets with differentiated services code points (DSCPs) based on QoS
class identifiers (QCIs).
MME
The MME is responsible for mobility management (context management and mobility status
management) of the control plane, and allocates temporary mobile subscriber identities
(TMSIs). The MME implements the following functions:
l Processes non-access stratum (NAS) signaling.
l Secures NAS signaling
l Manages the reachability of UEs in ECM-IDLE mode, including controlling and
implementing paging retransmissions.
l Manages tracking area lists.
l Selects a P-GW and S-GW.
l Selects an MME upon an inter-MME handover
l Performs authentication.
l Implements bearer management, including the establishment of dedicated bearers.
l Performs lawful interception over signaling services.
S-GW
The S-GW provides gateway functions for the EPC network and provides interfaces to the
E-UTRAN.
The S-GW implements the following functions:
l Serves as a local mobility anchor (LMA) for inter-eNodeB handovers.
l Helps the eNodeB with reordering during an inter-eNodeB handover by sending one or
more end markers to the source eNodeB.
l Buffers downlink data packets for UEs in ECM-IDLE mode and triggers paging to an
E-UTRAN.
l Routes and forwards packets.
l Marks uplink and downlink data packets with DSCPs.
l Supports subscriber- or QCI-based charging across systems of different carriers.
P-GW
The P-GW is a user-plane mobility anchor between 3GPP networks and non-3GPP networks,
and connects UEs to external PDNs. It provides gateway functions for the EPC network and
provides SGi interfaces to the PDNs.
The P-GW implements the following functions:
l Performs subscriber-based packet filtering using functions such as deep packet
inspection (DPI).
l Assigns IP addresses for UEs.
l Marks uplink and downlink data packets with DSCPs.
l Charges uplink and downlink packets based on service data flows (SDFs) defined by the
policy and charging rules function (PCRF) or DPI policies that are configured on the
P-GW.
Carrier-class Platform
The hardware platform provides a large data throughput, and the software platform seamlessly
integrates the wireless telecommunications technologies and data communications
technologies.
The hardware platform of the UGW9811 is Huawei Universal Switching Router (USR). The
USR is a carrier-class network switching device that conforms to the industry standards. The
software of the UGW9811 is developed based on Huawei Versatile Routing Platform (VRP)
and integrates the routing technology of the VRP, IP quality of service (QoS) technology,
virtual private network (VPN) technology, and security technology in data communications.
In addition, the software provides enhanced functions related to applications in wireless
telecommunication.
The UGW9811 provides a flexible solution to wireless data communications for network
carriers because the hardware platform of the USR provides high reliability and large data
throughput and the software platform seamlessly integrates the wireless telecommunications
technologies and data communications technologies.
High Reliability
In order to ensure the availability of the UGW9811, reliability of hardware, software, and
networking are all focal points when the UGW9811 is designed.
l Hardware reliability
The UGW9811 adopts the industry-leading network processors. The primary boards are
hot-swappable and provide the hot backup function. The UGW9811 uses a dual-power
supply system and has over-voltage and over-current protection.
l Software reliability
The UGW9811 provides diverse features to ensure software reliability, such as overload
control, traffic control, resource check, automatic fault detection, charging data record
(CDR) cache, and hot patching.
l Networking reliability
The UGW9811 provides route backup and route load-sharing modes and the Eth-trunk
interface function to prevent adverse impacts of single-node or single-interface failures
and ensure high network reliability.
High Security
In addition to reliability, carriers and subscribers are also concerned with security.
The UGW9811 adopts the following measures to safeguard their benefits:
l Verification of operator identities.
l Two authentication modes: Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge
Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP).
l Packet filtering and access control list (ACL) mechanism for filtering packets based on
preset conditions.
l SGi interface redirection to prevent packet attacks between UEs on the same UGW9811.
l IPSec for providing IP packets with high-quality, interoperable, and cryptology-based
security.
2 Product Architecture
2.1 Overview
The UGW9811 uses the Huawei N68E-22 cabinet. The design of the cabinet complies with
the International Electro Commission 297 (IEC297) and the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standards. The modular structure facilitates capacity expansion
and maintenance. The cabinet provides electromagnetic compatibility and uses
electromagnetic shielding interfaces.
2.2.2 Subrack
The subrack is mandatory. It houses the boards of the UGW9811, including the Switching
Route Unit (SRU), Service Processing Unit (SPU), and Line Processing Unit (LPU). Only
PGP-8 subracks are supported for the UGW9811.
Figure 2-2 shows the components installed in the subrack.
2.2.3 Boards
The UGW9811 has three types of boards: SRU, SPU, and LPU.
Their functions are as follows:
l The SRU is the core circuit board managed by the UGW9811.
l The SPU processes services.
l The LPU provides physical interfaces to external networks or NEs.
Figure 2-3 shows the typical board layout in the PGP-8 subrack.
SRU: Switching Route Unit SPU: Service Processing Unit LPU: Line Processing Unit
SRUs
As the main control unit of the UGW9811, the SRU controls and manages the UGW9811, and
exchanges data. The SRUs work in 1+1 backup mode. The major components of the SRU are
the main control unit, switching unit, clock unit, switching and synchronization clock unit,
and maintenance unit.
SPUs
The SPU performs functions such as service control, user packet forwarding, flow control,
QoS, and content resolution. The SPUs work in load-sharing, N+1 backup, or 1+1
active/standby mode. The 1+1 active/standby mode provides the best service reliability.
LPUs
The LPU provides physical interfaces to external networks. The interfaces include:
l 10/100 Mbit/s FE interfaces
l 1000 Mbit/s GE electrical interfaces
l 1000 Mbit/s GE optical interfaces
l 10 Gbit/s GE optical interfaces
The LPU has three modules: LPU module, switching network fabric adapter (FAD) module,
and physical interface card (PIC) module.
The three modules work together to implement fast processing and forwarding of service data.
In addition, they maintain and manage link protocols and forwarding information base (FIB)
tables.
