1. Offer and target groups

Basketball England delivers a Nothing But Net or Premier League 4 Sport satellite club network in 36
target areas during the 2013-17 Whole Sport Plan (WSP) cycle. The network encompasses a
minimum of 4 satellites and a weekly satellite club central venue competition and/or Open Run
session delivered in partnership with the accredited hub basketball club.

The target age group/market for this network is 14-18 year old boys and girls, who currently do not
have the appropriate opportunity to make the transition for school to community sport. We would like
to work with this target market as our insight has identified that basketball is extremely popular within
education with high boys and girls participation (circa 1.6M), however, evidence suggests there is a
significant drop-off into community basketball.

Satellite club networks will play a pivotal role in our evolving participant pathway. The network will
allow us to create a more effective bridge between educational basketball and our accredited club
delivery and informal basketball opportunities. This allows us to provide increased local opportunities
to play the game at the appropriate standard for the participant.

3. Delivery approach/costs

Basketball England Whole Sport Plan funded networks

The satellite club network are delivering in the identified target areas listed above ideally have a
minimum of four satellites and a weekly satellite club central venue competition or Open Run session.
In target areas such as London and Manchester the satellite network could comprise of up to 30
satellite clubs and supporting competition network.

Potential CSP local Investment funded satellites

We would foresee local investment funded satellites being developed on a smaller scale with the
opportunity for a hub club to develop a single Nothing but Net satellite or more.

What are Nothing But Net Satellite Basketball Clubs?

- Extension of an accredited hub basketball club
- Based on Secondary School, FE College or community site, targeted at 14 - 18 years.
- Delivered by accredited club coaches and young leaders
- Clubs will have a more informal structure and the style of delivery will be a mix of games,
competitions and coaching that is tailored to the needs of young people
- Clubs could be mixed or boys/girls only, depending upon local demand and will run every
week
- Satellite Clubs would usually run for 1 or 1.5 hours and would typically take place after 5pm.
Clubs to run for a minimum of 30 weeks per year with long term sustainability at the core

Equipment
Basketball England will supply each satellite with a Nothing But Net equipment bag, delivery guide,
marketing and promotional information and monitoring package.

Therefore, the key costs for running a satellite are the facility costs and coach expenditure. It is
difficult to put an exact figure on this as it ultimately depends upon the satellite club time, location etc,
however, as a broad outline, coach costs can be 15 20 and hour, with the facility being anything
from free to 50.00.

Role of the hub club

Accredited hub clubs will play a significant role in the planning, delivery and monitoring of the
programme. An outline of the key expectations of a hub club includes;

- Deploying the appropriately trained and qualified staff for satellite club sessions who deliver
fun and enjoyable sessions that engage participants from the target age group.
- Working with all relevant partners and organisations to promote satellite sessions to the local
community.
- Ensuring registers and registration forms are completed at each satellite session and
submitted on our Views portal in line with BE monitoring guidelines.
- Providing regular information to BE such as case studies of success, high quality satellite
club photos etc.
- Holding a minimum of one club open day specifically targeting satellite club participants
- Deliver agreed outcomes of satellite club development plan
- Ensuring the club has a flexible membership to promote satellite club participants

Facility
We are keen to see satellites based in the facility that is most appropriate for the target group of
participants; therefore, we will take a flexible approach to venues.

In an ideal world a satellite venue would have a minimum of two baskets, preferably more, and have
a full basketball court.

4. Workforce

Head Coaches within satellite clubs are currently required to be a minimum L2 qualified, with clubs
being encouraged to utilise suitably trained young coaches and activators.

As we have undertaken a targeted approach to delivery, accredited clubs delivering in the first phase,
have already undertaken a thorough workforce audit, and have the necessary resources or plans in
place to start delivery. We have developed delivery guides and materials which will support coaches
in maintaining the informal feel of the satellites, and will continue to reinforce this through online
video sessions and annual regional satellite club coach workshops.

To ensure each satellite club has long term sustainable at its core, every hub club delivering a
satellite will be supported their own development plan. These plans will be reviewed quarterly and be
subject to Basketball England financial support.

5. Regional structure (if applicable) and wider NGB support

We have two satellite club officers (North & South) who will provide local support for the CSP/partner
organisation in the planning, delivery and monitoring of satellites. They are:-

Laura Doherty (North) Laura.doherty@basketballengland.co.uk

Taner Adu (South) Taner.adu@basketballengland.co.uk

Wider club development support is available on a national level by contacting our Club and Workforce
Development Officer Allison Nolan Allison.nolan@basketballengland.co.uk

6. Role required by CSP Club Link Makers

- Provide information to BE on any potential venues interested in developing a satellite

basketball club from county mapping process.
- Work with BE to ensure WSP investment plans fit within county satellite club plans.
- Supported accredited clubs who are currently not identified for BE WSP satellite club funding,
to access local investment funding to develop one or more Nothing But Net satellite clubs.
- Support B3 in undertaking our 2013-17 facilities audit through utilising/partnering with county
satellite club mapping process.

If CSPs would like to establish a local satellite club with CSP local investment funding, we would look
to provide the following;

- Nothing But Net Satellite Club equipment bag, including balls, bibs, NBN Shooting Game.
- Workforce development support in terms of hosting and delivering coaching and officiating
courses.
- Nothing But Net posters and marketing materials to promote the clubs
- Nothing But Net Delivery Guide including access to online resources and videos on how to
ensure the club appeals to the target participants.
- Support from Basketball England Satellite Club Officers
