WIDA level: Developing (3): Simple and expanded oral sentences; responses show emerging complexity
used to add detail.
Purpose/Objectives: The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate the students ability to respond to a
spontaneous question and their ability to casually, and relevantly, speak about a topic.

Assessment:
1. Test taker hears: Describe what a predator is and please state three examples that we have
discussed in class. What is your favorite predator?
Test taker will respond with appropriate response. This response will include vocabulary of at least three
types of predators and describe what they do (i.e. hunt their prey).
2. Test taker hears: Please explain what a Herbivore is and give three examples.
Test taker will respond with appropriate response. He or she will use examples of the food that they eat
(i.e. grass, vegetables). He or she will also explain that herbivores do not eat meat and state three
examples of a herbivore (i.e Bunny, Deer, Cow).
3. Test taker hears: What is your favorite animal? Please tell me what it is and using the
terms that we learned in class, please describe it.
Test taker will respond with appropriate response. He or she will share their favorite animal and describe
whether it is a herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore. In addition, he or she will state what food it consumes
as prey (if a carnivore or omnivore) and what predators it has.
Points: The three questions are worth a total of 75 points. According to the rubric, Appendix 4.1 Student
Oral Language Observation Matrix, each question is worth 25 points.
Assessment items:
Nothing is required for the student.
A recorder to record the assessment and reflect back on it.
A paper and pencil to take notes during the assessment.
