Circuit Diagram for Overcurrent relay

Theory:
Relay Coil Current
Relay operates when, K1I2- K2 > 0. PSM =
Set Current
PSM—Plug setting multiplier,
TSM—time setting multiplier
Procedure:
1. Connect the circuit as shown in the figure; decide the equipment rating based on the Relay setting.
2. Set the relay setting (say plug setting of 2.5 A) and TSM (say 1).
3. Increase the current by autotransformer and resistance arrangement to a particular PSM.
4. Switch on the circuit at set value; record the time of operation of the Relay, till the contactor trips.
5. Repeat for two different values of plug setting and TSM.

Report:
1. Plot the graph showing the characteristic of overcurrent relay i.e. PSM-time curve.
2. Compare the curve with reference curve.
3. Discussion on the curve in 2.
4. Mention an application of such an overcurrent Relay

Discussion:
1. For higher current time of operation is less, why?
2. Is the condition 1 above necessary on power system?
3. Shape of the Aluminum disc in the relay is not circular, why?
4. What are the torques which govern the operation of the relay?
5. What is the limitation of the IDMT type overcurrent relay?
