We’ve decoded this

season’s beauty trends,
from eye-popping
eyeliners to jewel-
encrusted updos.
Follow our lead, and
you will be on-trend
in no time!

Beauty

FACE IT
Flushed Cheeks
Bye bye sculpted cheekbones —
this season’s beauty is all about
natural, flushed cheeks that will
make you look as if you spent a
day on the beach… or slopes!

Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzing Powder Set, $80, BobbiBrown.com

Back in Black
Liquid black eyeliner is back in style, and in a big
way. From the arched under-eyebrow liner to
liquid smokey eyes, bold and graphic black
eyeliner is a definite beauty trend for the fashion
elite. To keep the look gorgeous instead of garish,
keep your face bare and your eye makeup bold.

Stila, Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, $33, mecca.com.au

Brick Lips
While a classic red lip will always be in style,
considering courting her grungier younger sister,
brick. A nod to the 90’s grunge movement, the
brown-red hue evokes a more casual vibe than
in-your-face cherry red. To rock the look, keep your
makeup to a minimum and use only a few coats of
mascara and a few swipes of lipstick.
NARS, Lipstick, $44, mecca.com
HAIR DO’S
Pony Up
This season is all about revamping our favorite
childhood up do, the ponytail. Low ponies reigned
supreme on the runway, like the slicked-back side
pony or for more romantic tresses, twist the sides
of your hair into a half pony.

KÇrastase, V.I.P. Volume in Powder Volumizing Texturzing Spray, kerastse.com.au

Dressy Do’s
Forget your run-of-the-mill cocktail rings and statement
earrings; this season, hair dressing is the way to acces-
sorize. Pin up long locks with colorful floral bouquets or
add sophistication to a simple pony with a sleek tortoise-
shell clip. For truly statement-making do’s, use over-
the-top studded hairbands or jewel-encrusted clips.

Shu Uemura Art of Hair,

Essence Absolue Nourishing Oil in Cream, shuuemuraartofhair.com.au

Be Knotty
Unfussy, thrown-together buns dominated the
fall runways. From the structural yet simple
“sumo knot” to the messy, unbrushed buns,
knotted updos give even the most polished of
outfits a modern, cool girl twist.

Bumble and Bumble, Surf Spray, $43, mecca.com

13 / RETREATMAG.COM
NAIL IT
Graphic Manis
From nearly-black garnet shades to
rich sapphire polish, dark jewel-toned
nail polish is the nail trend this
season. Up your mani factor and add
a small rectangular strip on a nail or
two for a graphic twist.

Kit Cosmetics, Nail Polish, $16, mecca.com.au

All That Glitters

For statement-making nails, go for an arts and crafts
approach and experiment with glitter. Barely-there
silver glitter adds a subtle sophistication to the basic
natural nail. For eye-popping manicures, slather on
chunky glitter in bold, metallic hues.

Kit Cosmetics, Glitter Nail Polish, $16, mecca.com.au

Minimalist Mani
Just like fashion, low-key minimalist
manicure is having a major
moment. Keep things subtle with
clear glossy nails or rock a subtle
nude ombre.

Mecca Cosmetica, Enhance Top Coat, $22, mecca.com.au

RMS Beauty, 6-Free Formula Nail Polish, $23, mecca.com.au

SPORTIN’ SHORTS

It’s hot outside (duh) and no one wants to sweat to death at the office in a stuffy suit. Try experimenting with a pair of
well-tailored shorts. Remember the fingertip rule! This trend can go all kinds of wrong if not done right. Make sure the

Everybody loves casual Friday’s at the office, right, right? That’s no excuse to look sloppy… after all; you never know when
the big dog’s going to show up! Keep your denim looks polished by wearing a darker color denim, try a high-waist, a wrap

Beat the heat in an easy, breezy, cotton dress. Perfect for those days at the office when that’s exactly the last place you

Cottar’s
1920’s Safari Camp $490/per person; www.cottars.com

WHERE: KenYa
Experience: If Out of Africa is one of your favorite films, you can now turn your
20th century safari dreams into a present-day reality. Located on a vast private
conservancy stretching through the famed Masai Mara game reserve, Cottar’s 10
private tents are completely decked out in splendid 192o’s décor. Relax after a
long day of sightseeing by resting on the chaise lounge in front of your fireplace,
or enjoy a hot shower from your en-suite bathroom. If you want to mingle with
other guests, the brand new pool and spa area is situated near the two mess
areas, where fine dining and drinks are always available.

While the tents are full of old world elegance, the safari is high on adrenaline and
adventure. Since its inception in 1919, Cottars has been planning bespoke safaris
ranging from a few days to months’ long affairs for the last 100 years. Today, you
can choose either daytime safaris or nighttime ones, allowing you a better chance
to see the “Big Five” in their natural habitat. For a seriously stylish safari, drive
around the reserve in Cottar’s 1920’s vintage woody. Need a memorable wake-up
call? Partake in one of their “safari baths or showers,” where you can bathe with
wildebeest and passing zebras. You name it, Cottars has got it.

What you’ll see: Highest spotting of the “Big 5”: lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and
Cape buffalo.
When to go: During the Great Wildebeest Migration, which occurs July-September

Sasaab
$500/per person; www.thesafaricollection.com/properties/sasaab/

WHERE: KenYa
Experience: When you’re not cavorting around the vast plains of Africa, why not beat
the heat in a gorgeous, Moroccan-inspired villa? Situated near the Buffalo Springs
Natural Reserves in Kenya’s Northern Frontier District, the exclusive resort offers 9
exotic rooms, complete with open air bathrooms and private plunge pools. If relaxing
in your shaded, open-air villa seems a little too blasé, head to the property’s veranda.
Overlooking an elephant watering hole with breathtaking views of Mount Kenya, the
veranda is the perfect place to bask in the glow of the African sunset.

The nearby Ewaso Nyiro River makes Sasaab the best place for spotting many of
Africa’s famous wildlife. Another good reason to safari at Sasaab? The lounge is the
only tourism venture on the reserve, leaving the plains unspoiled and wild. You may
even run into the Samburu tribe, who calls the Northern Frontier District home. To
keep the plains perfectly wild, Sasaab goes to great lengths to ensure their services
promote an eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle. In addition to being a leader in eco-
friendly service, Sasaab leads the pack with adventurous excursions. After enjoying a
traditional safari, embark on a camel ride through the plains, or go fly-camping. For a
truly wild, authentic experience, Sasaab is the only choice.

What you’ll see: Aside from elephants and leopards, this is the prime spot for seeing
“The Samburu Special Five”: Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk
antelope, and Somali ostrich.
When to go: July-September during the high dry season, which coincides with the

calming tans and creams that balance the suite’s innovative design. For a truly decadent
and spacious retreat, book the private villa, which boasts two 2-bedroom suites linked

Lounge may seem intimidating. In reality, Hoanib is an incredibly sophisticated and
luxurious safari camp that is full of breathtaking desert and ocean views. Located in
the Kaokoveld Desert near the dried tributaries of the Hoanib River, which sits along
the Skeleton Coast of the Atlantic Ocean, the Hoanib Skeleton Coast Lounges offer an
interesting experience both on land and sea. Accessible only by plane, Hoanib Lounge is a
small, exclusive resort high in style and comfort. All seven luxury tents come with an en-

In addition to daytime and nighttime safari drives, the Hoanib offers walking tours of the
desert landscape, as well as coastal flights that allow you a bird’s eye view of the Skeleton
Coast’s craggy shorelines and seal colonies. Speaking of birds, the desert is a mecca
for bird watching, being home to many different species of lark, as well as jaegers and
skuas. Although the seemingly barren and harsh environment may not seem like a safari
paradise, the Hoanib Skeleton Coast Safari offers the unique experience of enjoying both
land and sea safari.

permanent tents for you to spend the night in. While only the canvas walls of your tent
separate you from the great Serengeti wilderness, these tents take glamping to a whole
new level. Decked with plush bedding, ensuite bathrooms, chandeliers, and butler
service, you would never even know you were camping.

A prime location for scouting the annual Great Migration, be prepared to witness the
