A day in DOST
Last November 23, 2017 we held our fieldtrip at DOST. I was expecting that the trip would
be a usual visit similar when one goes to a museum. But the trip was very educational and there's
just so many things new to my eyes. I was amused by the different machines that I only heard and
saw on the previous discussions.
We went to MIRDC. Here, we were able to see the world of metals industry. We were
able to take a look of their different laboratories and saw processes used in metals like molding,
casting, annealing, etc We also went to ITDI. One of my favorite part was when we wear
laboratory gowns and went inside an intensive care laboratory. This is supposed to be for
authorized personnel only, but we were given a chance to take a look of the high technology
equipments they are using in testing materials. One of the best equipments I had seen in ITDI is
the FE-TEM or Field Emission Transmission Electron Microscope. From its structure and feature
itself, which can magnify up 1.5 M , I could not stop admiring it.
I just realized the importance of the subject, materials science and engineering. We are
enrolled in the subject not just because it is required but the foundation from this subject would
help us understand materials and be able to conduct researches for a better and progressive world.
From the technologies and advancement in research that I have seen in DOST, I realized
that we, Filipinos, have a lot of potential in development and progress. Many people think that we
cannot make our own product so they just buy from other countries and import it here. But DOST
made me realize that we can actually excel and be globally competitive that can create products
worthy of recognition.
Because of the trip, I felt and realized that there’s really a big difference when you’re in
the industry and when you’re still in school. Education is all about learning the theory. The industry
is about application of all those theories. Doing tests, creating products, designing equipments,
analyzing real problems and then generating a solution, these things are what you really do in the
industry. Like everyone says, college is your training ground. But you do not really get a chance
to practice it because of certain limitations. In school, we have given a chance to learn and we
should not take that for granted. I must understand what I am studying, so that when the time
comes I need it, I could remember and know what to do.
