Subject: Large Majority of Austin Voters Support Requiring Private

Employers to Offer Opportunity to Earn Paid Sick Time

Date: December 18, 2017

A new Public Policy Polling survey finds that a large majority of Austin voters support
requiring private employers in Austin to offer employees the opportunity to earn paid sick
time. Support for the sick days provision was 63% and only 19% opposed, which stayed
largely unchanged at 62% support and 24% opposition even after respondents heard a
battery of arguments against and in favor of a sick days provision. Support for this
requirement, post-battery, is consistent across many demographics - including a majority
of women (65%), men (59%), those identifying as “very liberal” (85%), those identifying
as “moderate” (56%), Hispanics/Latinos (63%), Whites (59%), Asians (86%), African-
Americans (83%), voters age 18 to 45 (53%), voters age 46 to 65 (65%), and voters older
than 65 (70%).

Key findings from the survey include:

- Trump is highly unpopular in Austin, TX. Only 28% of voters said they approve of
his job performance, while 64% said they disapprove.

- 71% of self-employed individuals and business owners believe a convincing reason

to pass an earned paid sick time policy is that it makes workers more likely to stay
in their job, provides stability for both their families and their employers, and gives
them more money to spend with local businesses.

- 69% of voters who identify as “very liberal” are much more likely to support a
candidate that supports a proposed earned paid sick time ordinance.

PPP surveyed 600 Austin, TX voters from December 13-15, 2017. The margin of error is
+/- 4.0%. This poll was conducted by automated telephone interviews.
