AMA FERRIS

American Marketing Association Ferris State University Chapter December 2017

Fall Semester 2017

As school is in full swing, the Ferris State University chapter of American
Marketing Association is prepared to make this year their best one yet. While
keeping the success of last year in mind, AMA Ferris has set goals and started
working towards being a top chapter at the national level. “Effective leadership is not about
making speeches or being liked;
leadership is defined by results not
General Meetings attributes.”
Every Tuesday at 11am we have our general meetings. These meetings are in -Peter Drucker
BUS 203 and consist of icebreakers, professional development and planning
for future events. Our chapter invites all majors to join our Registered Student
Organization (RSO).

Throughout the semester Kendal Spring, our Vice President of Professional
Development, has planned several workshops and events to prepare
our members to be Ready for the World. These included “Cover Letter

former VP of PD, Katelyn Williams.

Career Fair and Internship Awareness Day have continued to participate in once a
month since then.
The Career Fair in October was held in Ewigleben Arena and offered students
a fantastic environment for students to get practice talking to employers, get
their resumes critiqued, and network with professionals. Members of AMA
Ferris attended the Internship Awareness Day in early November this year.
The event was held by the College of Business and conducted by Megan
Connaghan, the internship coordinator for the COB.

MLive Agency Tour

On November 10th, 18 of our members toured MLive in Grand Rapids, MI.
Students participated in a market strategy workshop where they looked at
a project that MLive was working on and took around twenty minutes to do
as much research as they could, and then shared what their ideas with the
company. They also did a data analytics workshop where they looked at
numbers of click rates and presentation time. Members were provided the
opportunity to eat lunch with six MLive employees. The employees sat as a
panel and answered questions that students had about their agency, life after
college, or anything about their fields.

Social
Ally Beck ,Vice President of Social
Affairs, kicked off the year with a social
at Precision Combat Arena in Big Rapids.
During the social, members and their
friends were given 2 hours and 500
rounds of ammunition.

The following month, AMA members

had a get together at the local frozen
yogurt shop, Toppings. They also took
on “Karaoke Wednesday” at the Gypsy
Nickel and sang the night away. Toward
the end of October, we also had a social
down in Grand Rapids at Art Prize!

These socials have been a fun way for

AMA members to bond outside of the
professional environment of meetings
and other events.

The Seventh Annual AMA Ferris Regional

Conference

After months of preparation, on November 2nd and 3rd, AMA Ferris held
their seventh annual Regional Conference along with Networking Night.

This year students from FSU as well as other schools were invited to join us at
Ferris State University to listen to five of our corporate partners speak about
their businesses followed by a networking session with the students.

The next morning we had students and faculty members from eight different
schools check in for our Regional Conference. The conference included six
speakers, two workshops, and two competitions. The speakers included the
Detroit Red Wings, Mary Kay, Weber Shandwick, Clif Bar, Easy On Hold,
and Shift Digital. The workshops included Getting Hired and a Leadership
Breakout Session. Finally, the competitions included Marketing Strategy
and the Sales competition led by Staples Business Advantage. Four of
our members won awards at the end of the night including the Marketing
Strategy team of Sarah Millen and Kim Hoholik taking home first and
Lucy Reigle and Zach Ineson received Honorable Mention for the Sales
Competition.

Fundraising
To participate in as much as AMA Ferris does, there must be a generous
supply of funds. AMA Ferris’ sponsors have helped greatly, but our
organization has taken part in multiple fundraisers. The very first of the year
was Toppings Frozen Yogurt in Downtown Big Rapids. One of the members
favorite fundraisers was up next, Cedar Point Halloweekend. AMA Ferris
members spent two days in the park and helped out with Park Services.
Members were also given time to explore the park and ride the rides.

Another fundraiser that was a huge success in October was the annual
College of Business Bowling Tournament. AMA Ferris members, other COB
RSO’s, and faculty rented out the Gate and enjoyed a friendly bowling
competition as well as a fun Halloween costume contest.

One more fundraiser that AMA Ferris took put in is the International Wine,
Beer, and Food Festival in Grand Rapids at the Devos Place. The festival ran
for three days, Thursday, November 16th through Saturday, November 18th.
Members helped out the vendors at the event by manning the booths and
poured the samples for the guests to try.

Pictured above are the winner’s of the costume contest that was held at the COB Bowling
Tournament. From left to right, Mike McCracking, Eli Simeon, Greg Brunner, Tyler Luptoski, and

One of AMA Ferris’ most important financial boosters each year is the money
that comes from our sponsors. This year so far we have been lucky enough
to have obtained eight sponsors. Those sponsors include Staples Business
Advantage, Northwestern Mutual, Clif Bar, Enterprise Holdings, Hylant
Insurance, Kroff Chemical, McGraw Hill Education, and Sherwin Williams.
Without these sponsors, we would not have been able to put together our
Regional Conference or Networking Night which constitutes as two of our
largest events during the year. Thank you to our sponsors!
Case Team
The AMA Collegiate Case Competition, started back in 1986, and is a
yearlong event that brings together top marketing students to work on
a marketing challenge submitted by a sponsoring organization. At the
beginning of the semester, Mary Kay Cosmetics presents us with a problem
the company is currently facing. The past three months, AMA members have
been working very hard to gather research, analyze data, and develop a
marketing strategy for Mary Kay. Countless hours have been put in to creating
a 40-page document that will be submitted on December 6th, 2017.

After submission, the top 10 teams will be invited to present their marketing
strategy at the International Collegiate Conference, to the top executives for
Mary Kay.

Crimson Consulting
This semester Crimson Consulting has been extremely busy, but very exciting.
They have taken on a multitude of projects including the CROP Hunger
Walk for Project Starburst, the Hat and Mitten drive through the Reed City
Methodist Church, Risk Management and Insurance program at Ferris State
University, Precision Combat Arena a local paintball business, and Day of
Discovery at Ferris State University.

These projects range in involvement from consulting to formation and

execution of marketing plans. CROP Hunger Walk, Hat and Mitten drive, and
Risk Management and Insurance are all previous clients that happily chose to
have Crimson Consulting work with them again this year.
